Many people in my Charismatic prayer group use the Life Application bible. It seems they like the warm & fuzzy footnotes. I looked at one, and in a footnote about Mary, it said she had several children. That was an immediate turn off for me.

What are your thoughts on this bible? Should Catholics be using it?

Thank you!

It is not an approved Catholic Bible. That’s just one great example - that is in direct conflict with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The Life Appilication Bible is the NIV version with Study Notes. I used to use it all the time as a protestant. THe problem is the author of the study notes, what are her/his/their credentials?

I would add to “what are their credentials” what is their biases and motivation behind their footnotes?

There are Catholic Bibles that have footnotes based on the “historical-critical” method of interpretation that are just as unreliable as this Life Application Bile because the footnotes are pushing aside the beliefs of the Church in order to replace them with the ideas that have come out of this newest form of biblical interpretation that not only has many flaws is merely theoretical and unprovable except by applying its circular reasoning.

So, we ought to avoid any Bibles with poor footnotes or ones that contradict Church teaching, especially by those whose knowledge of Church teaching is weak.

I would discourage any Catholic from using any Protestant Study Bible for the reasons stated above. The one exception I’d make is the Catholic Women’s Study Bible, published by Zondervan. Even though it is published by a Protestant publishing house, from what I can see it is free from doctrinal bias. I’m not too crazy about the NRSV translation it uses, but it’s a nice, attractive resource for those Catholic women who might not otherwise be inclined to study the Bible.

It’s too bad there aren’t other good, truly Catholic study Bibles available right now, but if they ever finish the Ignatius Study Bible, it’ll be a great one. In the meantime, I think it is always better to use a Catholic Bible and, if necessary, use seperate reliable commentaries like the Haydock, Navarre or Ignatius series.

If they ever finish the Ignatius Study Bible…does this mean they are working on one??? Will it have footnotes?

Yes, to both. They are currently being released a booklet at a time, but they are close to finished with the New Testament, at which time I expect they’ll put them all in a single volume before tackling the OT. Here is a link to view them.

I have The Jerusalem Bible 1966 (the very large maroon hardback with all the notes) The New Jerusalem 1985 (the very large Blue hardback with all the notes). These are excellent study Bibles but rare and hard to find. I saw the New Catholic Answers Study Bible. It has tons of leaflet type pages inserted (very good for the basics). I am really looking foward to The RSV-CE from Ignatius. I have looked at the book by book releases and found them excellent. I just can’t see buying them all individually unless I was in a Bible study group covering an individual book.
