I’m wondering where in the Bible does it say this or make a reference to it?

I was wondering the other day why Protestants hold that life begins at conception, because I havn’t found it in the Bible and seems to be more of a Church teaching.

I’m probably wrong and/or have a number of wrong assumptions, so enlighten me 🙂

There’s lots of biblical quotes on this subject. Someone put them all up here:
bible.ca/s-Abortion.htm

And let me say that not all teachings are in the Bible. Remember that we were instructed in Scripture to learn verbal as well as written Tradition.

Note, the below exerpt is NOT my own reasearch, it’s from this website:
religioustolerance.org/abo_hist_c.htm
Note the EARLIEST teaching on this subject dates 100-150CE, which is as close to the original teaching as one is gonna get in this matter:

*A brief timeline:

**Circa 100 to 150 CE: The Didache (also known as “The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles”), was a document written for the guidance of Christians. It forbade all abortions. **

Prior to 380 CE: Many Christian leaders issued unqualified condemnations of abortion. So did two church synods in the early 4th century:

Circa 380 CE: The Apostolic Constitutions allowed abortion if it was done early enough in pregnancy. But it condemned abortion if the fetus was of human shape and contained a soul.

St. Augustine (354-430 CE) accepted the Aristotelian Greek Pagan concept of “delayed ensoulment”. He wrote that a human soul cannot live in an unformed body. 3 Thus, early in pregnancy, an abortion is not murder because no soul is destroyed (or, more accurately, only a vegetable or animal soul is terminated).

Pope Innocent III (1161-1216): He determined that a monk who had arranged for his lover to have an abortion was not guilty of murder if the fetus was not “animated” at the time.
Early in the 13th century, he stated that the soul enters the body of the fetus at the time of “quickening” - when the woman first feels movement of the fetus. Before that time, abortion was a less serious sin, because it terminated only potential human person, not an actual human person.

Pope Sixtus V (1588) issued a Papal bull “Effraenatam” which threatened those who carried out abortions at any stage of gestation with excommunication and the death penalty.

Pope Gregory XIV (1591) revoked the previous Papal bull and reinstated the “quickening” test, which he determined happened 116 days into pregnancy (16½ weeks).

Pope Pius IX (1869) dropped the distinction between the “fetus animatus” and “fetus inanimatus.” The soul was believed to have entered the pre-embryo at conception.

Leo XIII (1878-1903): He Issued a decree in 1884 that prohibited craniotomies. This is an unusual form of abortion used under crisis situations late in pregnancy. It is occasionally needed to save the life of the pregnant woman.

He issued a second degree in 1886 that prohibited all procedures that directly killed the fetus, even if done to save the woman’s life.

Canon law was revised in 1917 and 1983 to refer simply to “the fetus.” The church penalty for abortions at any stage of pregnancy was, and remains, excommunication.

First, SCIENCE tells us so. At the moment of conception, a new human being with an entirely unique set of genetics is created.

Second, in Genesis, it is written - “the LORD God formed man…and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7). In the older Latin translation, it is “man became a living soul.” The Douay Rheims has it as “And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul.”

Also, in Jeremiah 1:5 it is stated: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you.” Although this is applied to the prophet, it also applies to ALL of us - that before you or I or anyone else was being formed in the womb (an act of God), God knew everything about us before we were born.

This is also echoed in Psalm 139:13 - “You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.”

In both, the writer through the Holy Spirit is showing us that, as far as God is concerned, life begins at conception. This is the teaching of the Church.

Like others have said, it’s a biological fact.

In Psalm 51:7, David says that he was sinful at his conception. Sinfulness is a spiritual condition, so David must have had a spiritual nature at the time of conception. How could he be sinful before his life had begun?

Psalm 51:5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

That seems pretty clear we are in sin at conception.

Note that Elizabeth and John recognize Jesus in Mary’s womb very shortly after conception.

Further, one may note that, as peary1 stated, from science we know that conception is the unique event in which the new being acquires its unique physical identity. It is living at this point, otherwise it would not grow. Thus it must be a new life.

Francis Beckwith has a great book on Abortion called Politically Correct Death.

concept precedes being - for example when God said "let there be light"it was so but GOD had a concept of what light was before it could be - twinc

I don’t think that God has a before. Everything is now for Him.

So people know in their heart that abortion is wrong?
I was listening to Dr. Peter Kreeft speak about how some people visited a remote village where the villagers had no contact with the outside world. The natives asked the visitors if they had wise people where they came from. The visitors responded by saying we do but some of them are atheists. The villagers responded by asking what are atheists. They were told that atheists were people who do not believe in any God. The villagers were baffled, how could someone not believe in a God, not any God whether good or bad gods. The villagers discussed amongst themselves and said that atheists must be people who are maybe blind and dumb and are locked in a cell somewhere. Clearly the villagers could know there is a god because they live near a river.

The visitors told the natives that there are people who pay doctors to kill unborn babies in their wombs. The villagers were even more shocked at this then the atheist idea. They told the visitors to stop telling them these things because it is giving them bad thoughts.

Who are the real primitives, us or them?

By far and wide, there is a Big Lesson to be learned here. This without a doubt shows that “mankind” of the modern world, is influnced a lot by Satan. We as Christians need to be very careful that we don’t let our “modern world” pull us away from God. These Villagers sound like they have "Wisdom and yet know God, even if they don’t know how to lable God like we do…yet they respect Life, and know God should be worshiped and all without a Bible.
