I have quite a dilemma. I have currently been in the Foreign Legion for 1 year. I have a fiance, a woman I have been seeing for years. The problem is with my military obligations I have only been able to talk to her over the phone. And in my current situation I am going only to be able to see her about 2 weeks out of the year for the next 4 years. My woman has told me that she misses me terribly; and would rather me just come back home to her. I know that being away from her is killing her, and me. I want to go back, and leave this military and be back with the woman I love but I dont want to run just because I miss her. Ive made rash decisions in the past. But then again I dont want to stay here and have her eventually leave me because this is a lot of pressure to put on a woman. Someone give me advice.(Unfortunatly here moving out here is not an option). I only planned on staying here for 5 years, but staying here for 5 years to earn a little cash is NOT worth losing her.

You have made a commitment. Backing out of one in order to make another isn’t really smart. Yes, you could lose her. But is it worth you integrity? Also, couldn’t she visit you from time to time? If the relationship is to work, both parties must make a few sacrifices.

There are things like e-mail, video conferencing, phone calls, and other ways to communicate if one wants to hold on. These relationships always take a hard hit when in process, but usually cool when Hope for the future (getting back together) takes hold. It becomes a putting off today for a better tomorrow. If both are willing to do this, it works fine… if not, well?

Yes, it is a dilemma, and as such one can do what one can do while keeping the commitments one made… this for one’s future well-being also. She maybe would not like visiting you in jail for a long time either for going AWOL. It really becomes a thing to finish ones tour of duty (honorably)… then, get back to whatever life is still there that you left behind or make a new one.

It is hard on both parties (been in your shoes, but it was only letters and 1 phone call then), and mine has turned out well. Not with the girl I left behind (she did not like me when I got back, said I had changed from what I was when I left… duh! It’s called growing up with what one sees and does in the service), but with another that has proved God-Given for the last 36 years. One never knows, but it is still worth doing your part to hold it together for what you have now (I did).

And yes, one’s ‘Integrity’ is more important then whatever is in second place.

Are you in the French foreign legion? If so, just desert next time you are on leave. And get outta France quick.
