I have heard Protestants refer to a particular verse of Scripture that has meaning for them as their “life verse.” (I think that is what they call it.)

Anybody here have a life verse? How did you get it? What does it mean to you?

Can your life verse expand to become a little collection of verses?

What’s the deal? I never thought about such a thing until a friend of mine brought it up, and I realized that I probably DO have a “life verse” – I just didn’t know that I had!

It’s a nice idea, isn’t it? I think of Psalm 131 as my “life verse”, although I have never phrased it like that.

Ps.131
[0] A Song of Ascents. Of David.
[1] O LORD, my heart is not lifted up,
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
[2] But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a child quieted at its mother’s breast;
like a child that is quieted is my soul.
[3] O Israel, hope in the LORD
from this time forth and for evermore.

MAN! That would be my second choice! It appears on the same morning of the LOH that my “life verse” appears – in another Psalm.

It’s a lovely little Psalm, isn’t it? So what is your life verse in Psalms? Snoopy…ah, that is…inquiring minds want to know!

In TWO Psalms! Half a verse: O God, my heart is ready!

Did you notice that Mel Gibson put those words into Jesus’ mouth at the beginning of the scourging in The Passion? Very powerful, and appropriate, I thought.

Getting chills here. The follow up to that opening in both Psalm 58 and Psalm 108 is: I will sing, I will sing and give praise.

I’ve never heard of the phrase “life verse”… but I guess this is the one I’d choose…
My mom pointed it out to me as a child… and it’s stuck with me ever since…

Jeremiah 29:11-14

    For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope.
    12
    When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you.
    13
    When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart,
    14
    you will find me with you, says the LORD, and I will change your lot;*

Getting chills here. The follow up to that opening in both Psalm 58 and Psalm 108 is: I will sing, I will sing and give praise.
And in Ps. 22, when the Suffering One finishes his list of sufferings, he says:

[22] I will tell of thy name to my brethren;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee:

From there on the Psalm turns to praising God and urging Israel to do the same. Not a coincidence, but a confirmation that death is followed by life and suffering by a full and grateful heart. The Gospel in miniature.

Getting on to non-Psalm verses (although there are certainly many in the Psalms that could easily be life verses for me) one of my favourites has to be from St Paul - ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’

Proverbs 10: 24. When the tempest passes, the wicked man is no more; but the just man is established forever.
This explains my conversion experience. Tim

John 15:13 - “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Where your treasure is, there will your heart also be. Matt 6

These are so touching. This is more than just a choice of a “favorite” verse. These verses are profoundly reflective of each person’s experience of Christ.

Thank you all for coming forward with them.

Psalm 91 saved my life.

I was headed down a pretty rough road when my good pastor shared it with me, and asked me to pray over it.

That was the first time I truly felt God’s love.
