I see a movie will be coming out based on the Limony Snicket books. Can anyone tell me what these books are like? The preview looked a little dark, but that’s not necessarily an indication. Lord of the Rings was very dark in parts because it had to be to represent evil. Just want to be prepared when the kids start asking to go. Thanks.

The books aren’t dark at all. They appeal to boys more than girls (from my limited experience), so they’re probably not as warm and fuzzy as other series. But they’re also very addictive quick reads that are pretty benign, but fun!

Ah, well, I doubt that there’s anything to worry about. I’ve read some of the Limony Snicket books and they actually weren’t that bad. Also, I wouldn’t judge a movie by it’s previews either. The first time my parents saw the trailer to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, they immediately decided “Nope! You guys aren’t watching that, too dark! It looks so evil, it would warp your minds!!”

But, when they viewed the movie for themselves, they thought it was fantastic. So they let us watch it after all. So yeah, this movie may look dark from the previews, but I doubt it’s bad in any way.

my two teenage cousins, both girls, love Lemony Snicket. It’s called “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and is exactly that. If you like happy endings, you won’t like Lemony Snicket - it’s just one bad thing after another happening. BUt it’s not occultish or anything like that.

I am a huge fan of lemony snicket!
  1. Although the children’s parents are dead the idea of family is strong.
  2. Talents are developed per each child’s ability
  3. Lemony Snicket uses huge vocaublary and explains it well…anyone know what “estervaz” means?
  4. Lemony Snicket uses clear good vs evil…but also shows in a way that fears, quirks, can be harmful if you let them control you
However: these books are about kids being abused by adults in their life. Sensitive children as well as adults would take care not to read these books. I say this because I know many bad things that happen to the kids goes over my head because I don’t realize its wrong. Another friend (actually one adult and one child) read these books and was completely appaled by what happened to the kids. I don’t see it, so I warn not out of experiance but because someone told me.

DON’T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SEE THIS MOVIE !! Read the books instead… they are excellent and as we all know, movies are never as interesting. My entire family including kids ages 12 - 6 have loved each and every one - (there are 11 books and counting.) I beseech, a word here which means to ask for earnestly, you to go down to your local library today and check out “The Bad Beginning” which is book one. <>< CM

My devout non-Catholic Christian sister lets HER daughters read Lemony Snicket books, and her entire family is looking forward to the movie.

This same sister feels that if I don’t go to hell for being Catholic, that I will for letting my son read Harry Potter 😃 .

I have to say, I’m suprised at the enthusiasm for these poorly written and not very imaginative books. I don’t think they are wicked, though a central theme is “kids good; adults bad.” The problem is they are (like Harry Potter) painfully derivative. If you want to read this genre, read the Roald Dahl stuff–James And the Giant Peach, etc. The writing is much better. Full disclosure–I only read the first one. I could not devote the time to reading another. I guess if your kids have already read Treasure Island, Tom Sawyer, Captains Courageous, Wind in the Willows, etc., then you can break out this junk.

the first one was bad…I read the second first…and I do admit I probably wouldn’t of kept reading had I read the first one first, but its a good series and getting better by the book. (btw book 11 is comming out soon and if I could figure out the silly libary of congress system at my university I would get it)

I HATE Limony Snicket’s books. The are very unhappy. I usually am very happy, so they don’t mix well with me…😃

Very Finely Done,

Any other comments for this?
Objection?

I’m planning to read the books, but I’m not sure.

Well, I liked the books but the conclusion was so bad, I was utterly disappointed. And, a little bitter. 😉

Don’t read the last book. Imagine your own ending.

I hate it when authors do that!

Does this set the record for the oldest thread to be resurrected? Almost 2 1/2 years 😛

(We watched the movie; I was quite underwhelmed.)
