I had quite a conversation on Sunday with my eigth grade Religous Ed class.

One student mentioned in passing that she watches the Lisa Williams show. Williams is a clairvoyant who speaks with the dead.

I explained that we Catholics should be nowhere near that kind of activity - including fortune tellers, Tarot cards, etc.

They were shocked and started asking all kinds of questions. We ran out of time but I want to pick up where we left off this Sunday and drive home how dangerous this kind of material is.

I know there are some verses in the Bible about God hating sorcerers and fortune tellers - does anyone know where I can find them?

Also, any other suggestons to help drive the kids away from this kind of material would be appreciated.

Thanks

Deut 18:10-12

10 Let there not be found among you anyone who immolates his son or daughter in the fire, nor a fortune-teller, soothsayer, charmer, diviner, 11 or caster of spells, nor one who consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead. 12 Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the LORD, and because of such abominations the LORD, your God, is driving these nations out of your way.

Perhaps juxtapose sorcery with prophecy, and the other charisms, and how if it’s from God, you don’t go seeking it?

The spirits or souls of the dead (“ghosts”)
are under God’s control.
They are either in
a) heaven
b) in purgatory on the way TO heaven
or
c) in Hell.
They are not roaming the earth just waiting for Lisa Williams
to summon them at will.
There are plenty of fallen angels or “demons,” however,
who are perfectly willing to impersonate a dead person
and lead people astray. People who try to summon spirits are
really making contact with demonic entities and I firmly
believe that this is why such things as seances and spirit mediums are condemned by sacred Scripture.

Some saints have mentioned that “ghosts” are souls in purgatory trying to get your attention to pray for them, have Mass said for them, and sacrifice for them.

Some believe (as stated above) that “ghosts” are demons leading souls astray.

In either case, there is absolutely nothing in Church teaching that makes it okay to use the occult to contact the dead. It does not appear in tradition nor scripture nor catechisms nor papal decrees. Don’t do it. Don’t fund it. Don’t support it.
