Mediocre Catholic theologians who converted to Protestantism:

Note-- If anyone can think of any other names please let me know.

The only one I can think of that maybe would make the second list would be Martin Luther.

I tried to highlight the blank area, thinking it was some secret message, until I realized I overshot your message. oops.

This actually is one of the small blessings Protestantism has brought. In that many nominal Catholics or Catholics who don’t know why they are Catholic convert to a active faith. By the grace of God there are some who come back renewed and having studied their way to the Catholic faith now appreciate it. Unfortunately some are like my brother who become anti-catholic and some are like one of my employees who is not an athiest and doesn’t think anything is true.

We need to encourage everyone to search for truth, evangelize and educate.

God Bless

Matthew Fox, ex-OP. Technically, he was a Catholic priest and taught Catholic theology at a Catholic college. Now, technically he is an Episcopal priest. I think the proper, technical description of his theological position now, though, is “nut”.

Matthew Fox has now resorted to having rave masses at his church! Thank God he’s not causing further scandal under the catholic name he is the Anglican’s problem now.

When were the first two ever Catholic ?

I think that identifying people as theologians depends on whether one inhabits the same sort of mental world as they do; and on the extensiveness and depth of their theological competence. I would call Boettner a theological writer rather than a theologian; and I would not call Chick a theologian at all, or a theological writer.

OTO, the theological culture of the US looks so different in many ways from that of the UK or Europe that perhaps one can’t usefully make comparisons. ##

Methinks me smells the sweet aroma of sarcasm, there!

What our friend is subtlely saying there is these three are such strong Catholic Theologians, that they know more about the Catholic Church than the Catholic Church does!

Think about it. Who know that we invented the Papacy until Lorraine told us???

We should add, however, that millions of Roman Catholic lay people have swelled the ranks of Protestant congregations, mostly in pursuit of contraception.

Which is a moral issue (for them) less than a doctrinal issue…

Well, typically these ex-Catholics say, “I disagree with the Church on a *few *points.” Why do they say that? Because they are referring to (a) Humanae Vitae and its clear, decisive inclusion of use of contraceptives in the list of sins; and (b) papal infallibility, because infallibility happened to be focused-upon, in our age, around the time Humanae Vitae was promulgated, so that millions conmsidered Humanae Vitae to be a document alleged to be “infallible” – beyond dispute – in their eyes forcing them to choose between Catholicism and easy access to birth-control protected sex.

In my view, these folks are leading the Great Apostasy out of the Church, predicted by Paul to precede the end, and so their departure, along with the apathetic, actually comprises an “end times marker.” He is close, “even at the door.”

Not enough of the current crop has converted.
They prefer to stay in the Church were they can do more damage.
However calling them Catholic is a strecth of the term.
