List of Sacramentals

I thought I’d try to get a list of all the different sacramentals used by people on this board, or that they have heard of, a kind of catalogue of the spiritual jewels of the Church, both physical (statues, medals) and non-physical (prayers, etc.)

So, to start:

THE ROSARY - speaks for itself really

THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS

• the liturgical ‘heartbeat’ of the Church’s daily life, prayed by all priests and religious, and many lay people.

THE BROWN SCAPULAR

• worn under clothes, revealed by Our Lady to St Simon Stock, a Carmelite in the 13th century
• enrolment in the scapular involves a number of commitments, and carries the promise that Our Lady will deliver the wearer from purgatory on the 1st Saturday after their repose

THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL

• revealed by Our Lady to St Catherine Laboure in the 1830s, and a foundation of the missionary work of the Legion of Mary, its’ symbols can be used to explain the whole of the Catholic faith, saved many wearers from Cholera outbreak in Paris in 19th century

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS

• 14 stations, set up in most Catholic Churches, at each station a series of prayers recited and a meditation on the passion of Our Lord
• carries a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions.

OK—I’ll post a definition from Catholic Dictionary

Any object set apart and blessed by the Church to excite good thoughts, to increase devotion, and thus to remit venial sin. The name signifies that the article blessed has some resemblance to a sacrament, inasmuch as it is a means of grace; but a sacramental differs from a sacrament in this, that the latter always produces grace directly when there is no obstacle on the part of the recipient, while the former produces it only indirectly, by causing devotion in the mind of the user. The sacramentals include:

agnus Dei
ashes
bells
candles
cross
crucifix
holy oils
holy water
incense
palms
religious medals
rosary
scapulars
sign of the cross
stations of the cross
vestments

Holy Water is the most common for me. I have also heard of Blessed salt, but have never used it myself.

I do not think the prayers themselves are considered a sacramental, since a prayer itself is not a tangible thing which can be blessed. It would be the prayer book or the station image. Anybody have any other info?
