Listening to Music on youtube immoral?

Hi,
I know it is immoral to illegally copy music which is not yours, however is it immoral to listen to music sent by say a friend which was probably “pirated” in the sense that someone uploaded it to youtube. Listening to it would be streaming it not downloading. Also it is not known whether the music uploaded was their own or not (eg music video uploaded by author). THANKS!!

I can’t say that listening to music on youtube would sound that great. Most of these sites have some licensing and royalties agreement with the major labels, so you are not stealing or listening to stolen media.

If you want to listen to music for free, that is legal and sounds good, go to the Groove Shark website.

If a copyright holder objects, they have recourse in having youtube remove the offending content.

Rest assured, youtube will not host copyrighted material that is in dispute.

If a major label doesn’t want their content on youtube, their content will not be on youtube.

However…let’s take the UFC for example. The UFC guards their content very carefully. You will not find much ( if any) UFC content that isn’t associated with the official UFC youtube page.

However, after a big fight, people flood youtube with the pay per view fights. The UFC videos don’t last very long, as youtube ( or UFC) actively monitor and remove the content.

So, if you were to watch one of those videos before it was removed, knowing full well that the UFC doesn’t approve of their copyrighted material being hosted on youtube, then perhaps you’d have something to ponder.
