Little Office of the Virgin Mary

Hello,
I don’t know if this is the right place to post this but I was wondering how some of you pray the Little Office.
Do you have to pray the entire day, or parts of it?
Can you only do the prayers you can?
Just wondering…I bought it and have not been able to do one entire day.
Just don’t want to do it wrong.🤷

As I understand it…and if I am wrong there will be plenty of replies to my posting…:rolleyes: with the 1988 edition, Morning and Evening Prayer are the hinges on which the Office turns. It also has a very limited Office Of Readings, Day Prayers, and Compline.

Myself, I read only the 14 Morning and Evening Prayers on a daily basis. Sunday, when I have the day off from work, and thus some extra time, I will also do the Office of Readings and the Day Prayers.

Oh, and I do not do the Little Office every week, to avoid boredom. Maybe one week per month or two. I am doing the Office this week, 11 - 17 May, since 13 May is Our Lady Of Fatima.
 
In my copy of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary it has Morning, Daytime, Evening, Night time and the Office of Readings. I often miss the hour that I am looking to pray (happens alot to me :rolleyes: ) and so I will pray the Office of Readings since it can be prayed at any time of the day.

I commend you on trying to pray the entire office for a day…it is not easy to do! 👍 I haven’t been able to that’s for sure. 😦

I must confess that I am horrible at keeping a set hour of prayer and so the Office of Readings are of a great help to me. The Little Office is what I often turn to when I can’t focus my heart/mind in praying the rosary and get attacked by one distraction after another.

All prayer is good when it is done from the heart…no matter how long or short it is…no matter how many times you may stumble over the words. For God its not about doing a prayer exactly right but whether or not it comes from your heart.

I don’t have the Little Office, but I do try to pray some of the Liturgy of the Hours. My understanding is that, for lay people, everything is optional, so whatever you CAN do is good. I start work at 7:30 and am NOT a morning person, so I never do Morning Prayer. I often do the Office of Readings at lunch, sometimes with Midday Prayer, and I pray Evening Prayer in the…uh… evening. 😉

I’m sure the more you’re able to do, the better, but some is better than none.

Definitely - read my signature for what St. Therese says about that!

I only read them off and on, however doing the morning and evening prayers do seem the most important (and the ones with a variety of prayers between each day).🤷

In my case, I work at the Post Office 3 PM - 11:30 PM. I am likely to do “Morning Prayer” during my 5 PM Coffee Break. Well, it has to be Morning somewhere else on earth.:rolleyes:

“Evening Prayer” may be during my Lunch period, around 9 PM, or even when I get back home, which is after Midnight. Again, it has to be evening somewhere else on Earth:D
 
My dh & I pray the Little Office daily. We pray Morning Prayer after breakfast, Evening Prayer after dinner, and Night Prayer before bed. Sometimes it means that we might have to get up a little earlier or go to bed a little later, but it works for us. As investees in the Brown Scapular, this is required unless you get permission to pray the Rosary instead.

Another option available for those who wear the brown scapular is to abstain on all Wednesdays and Saturdays, in addition to Fridays. This is the option I have chosen
