When I read threads like this, I realize how much I don’t know. I suppose I should be more aware of all the things that may be wrong instead of focusing on the reason we are there…the Holy Eucharist.

Please don’t get me wrong. The point of this thread is to put all the attention on the Holy Eucharist by stopping abusive practices that detract from it. There’s a reason the Magisterium of the Church puts forth documents with instructions on how Mass is to be celebrated, because it’s not up to us (whether we are priests, nuns, EMHCs, lectors, or “ordinary” laity).

One reason people aren’t “more aware of all the things that may be wrong” is because they simply don’t know things are supposed to be done in a particular manner. It doesn’t seem odd when someone who hasn’t been ordained gives a “homily”, or when the texts of prayers are changed on a whim, or when the Eucharist is treated like ordinary bread and wine, because they haven’t been properly catechized. If Catholics aren’t aware of the sacrificial nature of the Mass, they’ll stop believing (if they ever started at all) in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. EMHCs will dump the contents of the Chalice and other cups down the drain because it’s “just wine”.

I’m not an alarmist. I’ve seen these things. That’s why I’m concerned, and that’s why I’m trying to fix things.

People should NOT go to Mass with a clipboard and an highlited copy of the GIRM. The purpose of the “Liturgical Abuse?” questions is to provide people who witness the same thing at their parish the specific reference and document that they need to seek a correction of the abuse. Again it is not intended to be used to train liturgical police. If it bothers you that other people are concerned about inappropriate liturgical practices. Don’t read the “Liturgical Abuse?” threads.
