We recieved quite a shock today at Mass as we found out one of our Priests had been placed on administrative leave for what our Pastor calls a “very serious lapse in judgment concerning the consecrated Eucharist.” Our Pastor went on to explain that in consultation with our Bishop this lapse in judgment was in violation of Cannon Law and that a full investigation will take place to see what will happen next.

My question is what could type of violation would one committ that would lead to such a change in status? Looking through Cannon Law my best thought would be that it would have someting to do with either concelbrating with someone that isn’t validly ordained or not using the proper form, such as leavened bread, but the Pastor expressed that it was somthing concerning the Consecrated Eucharist.

I am praying for this young Priest and maybe it is wrong to be curious but I think it will help me understand the situation if I could have an idea as the type of abuse that could have taken place.

Not enough detail to go on as you probably guessed. From the language it seems we can infer that the Eucharist was validly consecrated. That is, it was the Body and Blood of Our Lord, so I don’t think it was a defect of form or matter because that would invalidate the Sacrament.

That leaves what he could have done with a validly consecrated Eucharist. I dunno.

I am sorry to hear about the upsetting situation with a priest at your parish. Please do not try to guess at what could have gone wrong; instead please pray for this priest and for a fair and peaceful resolution for all involved. The truth will come out soon enough and any guessing would be scandalous and gossip.

I agree that it is best not to spend so much time speculating on what the priest could have done wrong.

Believe me, I understand that wanting to know what could have happened is an extremely powerful desire. It is easy to convince yourself that knowing would help everyone avoid the same fault. But most likely, knowing what happened will not have the result.

But as has been mentioned, the truth will most likely eventually come to light. In the mean time, when the desire to know what happened strikes you, offer up the frustration of not knowing for the good of this priest. And avoid the parish gossip that will most likely be taking place.

if it is necessary for the parishioners and laity of the diocese to know, they will be told, but they will not be told until the investigation is complete and all the facts are known and judged by the canon law tribunal, and disciplinary action under canon law is in place.

speculation is of no value, and can only lead to damaging gossip and scandal, so I would turn to prayer rather than guesswork.
the most profitable action for laity affected by this would be to concentrate on fostering reverence for Christ Present in the Eucharist through increased devotion, adoration, and worthy reception of communion, and of course prayer for the priest in question.

[172.] "Graviora delicta against the sanctity of the Most August Sacrifice and Sacrament of the Eucharist are to be handled in accordance with the ‘Norms concerning graviora delicta reserved to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’, namely:

a) taking away or retaining the consecrated species for sacrilegious ends, or the throwing them away;

b) the attempted celebration of the liturgical action of the Eucharistic Sacrifice or the simulation of the same;

c) the forbidden concelebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice with ministers of Ecclesial Communities that do not have the apostolic succession nor acknowledge the sacramental dignity of priestly Ordination;

d) the consecration for sacrilegious ends of one matter without the other in the celebration of the Eucharist or even of both outside the celebration of the Eucharist."

At this point anything that anyone comes up with is pure speculation and not worthy of discussion. Suffice to say that prayer is called for, not only for the priest involved, but also for the Bishop and those in council with ;him over this matter. These are not to be taken lightly and on our part, prayer should be our only response.
