I oftentimes see pictures of priests celebrating mass while wearing costumes (indian, clown, etc.)

Are these abuses, or just a certain “way” that a priest may dress for mass?

In other words, is this OK or not?

Are you sure they are Catholic priests, though? Sometimes videos surface of abusive ‘Masses’, and it turns out that they are not of a Mass, or even in a Catholic church.

“Oftentimes?” Where are looking that you see these “oftentimes”?

I did a quick search and found pictures of Episcopalians and others… but only one Catholic mass that was “in costume” - and it was an absolute nightmare from the pictures

But I didn’t see anything remotely indicating that this sort of thing happens often 🤷

As for whether or not it is “abuse” – I’ll let others discuss that. Gotta get to work.

Clown Masses? Yeah, that’s litugical abuse. No doubt about it.

They are fake, totally made up. No one can say when or where these Masses happened.

Every single one of these claims are made by radical sedevacantists who want to tear down the Church.

I can’t say to what extent this happens, perhaps none, but things don’t have to get this far before the Vatican has to put its foot down. Cardinal Arinze in one of his videos has slammed “creative,” “banalizing,” and “desacralizing” actions, blaming them for the pursuit by many to restore the old Mass. So I would think this is NOT okay and not what “mother Church says.”

Right. You have to be very careful about pictures (or videos) you find on the internet. Things are often misconstrued and taken out of context.

Hmm :hmmm: I *rarely *if *ever see such pictures. Indeed, I think I can safely say I have never seen a picture purporting to be a priest celebrant wearing an Indian costume.

You and I must surf in remarkably different circles… :ehh:

(* Well, I’ve seen pictures of an acquaintance who is an east Indian bishop, but never mixing cultural with religious dress?)

+, like a million.
Do not be troubled.
There are devoted and holly priests saying Mass. Why is it they never get any prayers or press?

I’m not a sedevacantist. A former pastor at my parish donned a scary Halloween mask for the final blessing one year at the All Saints vigil mass.

It really happened.

Maybe they were all photoshopped or staged for youtube for all I know. Yet there are a few who admit to abuses happening but some of them are also quick to point out abuses also occurred in pre-Vatican II times.

Even a single occurrence of something like this, years ago, lives on in the Internet, to be referenced and re-linked by those who feel the need to claim that such things are common and current.

Yes, dressing like a clown is an abuse, but this is certainly not a common occurrence.
