Liturgical abuses: a first step to prevent them

I have seen a lot of threads where people accuse priests and bishops of starting and/or accepting liturgical abuses and celebrating Masses with illicit behaviors. I personally do not like to hear that but I think that there is a lot of truth in it.

Today on my way to work I was listening to Relevant Radio and I heard a comment of a priest that was discussing that. He said something that really hit me. “In order to destroy the flock, the devil must first attack the shepherd”. This is why a lot of faithfuls see so many abuses in our churches.

Tomorrow, August 4th is the feast day of St. John Vianney, patron saint of priests. I see it as our duty to use that day to pray for all the priests and bishops because they need our support in keeping the Church strong and visible The divine institution of the Church will never fail but the flock will be greatly hurt if we do not intervene.

For just one day lets make our duty to stop expressing our frustrations by blaming the people and stand in prayer to give them our love and support.

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

As one that has complained of abuses, and PERCEIVED abuses, and sometimes, not realizing that something that I think is fine is an abuse, let us also pray that our Priest (and Bishops and Cardinals) will lead us more closely.

This cannot happen if we don’t ALLOW them to lead us! And we should be supportive when things go right, and ready to help them to get back on track, should they ever falter.

What a great idea! Thanks for the reminder to pray for our priests. I think Satan has most of his demons prowling the world seeking to ruin the souls of Catholic priests. I can’t imagine the spiritual battles that priests must face every moment.

I watch our priests offer the mass every day and thank God for the grace and heroic generosity of spirit that led them to stand before the altar so we can see god each day. If they serve perfectly, it is by God’s will and grace and if they err, by God’s grace and mercy they will find their way back.
