Liturgical Calendar quesiton

This question is about feast day rankings. Well, this coming Christmastide, the Feast of the Holy Family is supposed to fall on the Sunday after Epiphany (jun 6) which will be January 13th, 2008 this year. The Feast of the Holy Family is a II class feast, however Commemoration of the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ is fixed to be on January 13th, this is also II class. Which one is observed? Which one is transfered?

If I had to guess, I would say the commemoration of the baptism is more important than the holy family.

Thanks! Now I remember, I remember reading that somewhere, I think our priest today did the Feast of the Most Precious Blood n added the collects, secrets, post-communion prayers etc. of fourth sunday after pentecost as well. Thanks!

Hmm, I’m wondering, speaking of liturgical calendars. I know the tridentine rite and the modern calendars are slightly different. Is it just me, or did anyone else read about rumors of the Pope allowing any priest to celebrate the Tridentine Mass but would make us follow the novus ordo calendar? That would stink, cuz then everyone would need to get updated Roman missals since the proper of the saints would be moved around.

If your priest commemorated the 4th Sunday after Pentecost, then he made a mistake. Under the rules of the 1962 missal, when a feast of Our Lord pre-empts a Sunday, there is no commemoration of the Sunday. If another first class feast, not of Our Lord, pre-empts the Sunday, then the Sunday is commemorated. That is why last Sunday’s feast, that of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, included a commemoration of the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost, but today’s feast did not follow suit.

Since the document hasn’t been released yet, this is only speculation. However, if the Holy Father wishes to please Traditionalists and bring them back into the Church, he certainly would not change the Liturgical Calendar that they love. It would also cause a lot of work for the Sacred Congregation of Rites too because they would have to rewrite the propers for the Masses that they changed and possibly change some of the class rankings for feasts. I think that would be too much work, for a Motu Proprio. However, this is only my opinion.

Normally, that is how it would work but I think the 1962 (and post 1956) missal is little different. You commemorate the Sunday after Epiphany but the the Baptism of the Lord is omitted. Both the Holy Family and the Baptism are feasts of the Lord so one (the lower, the Baptism) gets omitted.

In the pre-1956 rubrics, the way they would do it it would be to anticipate so you’d celebrate the Holy Family, with commemoration of the Sunday, on the Saturday.

The Sunday does not get commemorated at all, because Holy Family is a feast of the Lord. Not that it matters that much usually (except in situations like this) because the Mass of the Sunday will definitely be repeated throughout some of that week (barring particular feasts, etc.) until the 13th- the rubrics do not allow the saying of low Votive or daily Requiem Masses.

To add to the confusion! St Joseph’s Feast next year falls on Wednesday of Holy Week. The Congregation has announced it will be celebrated on 15th March, but that date has been announced for the Feast of St Patrick! I hope the St Patrick’s day Parade organisers, and the many othereswho celebrate the Irish festival annually are alert!

According to my Great Grandmother’s Missal (Pre 1955), when January 13th falls on a Sunday (the Baptism of the Lord/Octave of Epiphany) then the Feast of the Holy Family is observed on the preceeding Saturday, January 12th. I don’t know how it is for the Missal of 1962. As for the current Missal, if New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, then the Feast of the Holy Family is observed on the Friday, December 29th.
