Does anybody know where I can find sources for church ritual and liturgy for middle age Europe? I’m specifically wondering if the Church recorded any rites of knighthood, but am also interested in looking into the development into the period of Trent for Catholic rites in general.

I’m sure we have records somewhere, I did not see any on the medieval source book on line and ORB, and did not see anything.

Thanks!

It is possible that you can get it from the Vatican library archives…go its website and make an inquiry.

Thanks, I’ll be looking there too…

I did find the Pontificale Romanum on the internet (in Latin only) which includes a rite for a sword blessing, several coronation ceremonies and at least a later knighting ceremony (De Benedictione novi Militis) and even more interesting is the blessing and imposition of a cross for the retaking of the Holy Land…the rite to appoint a crusader, for history guys, very facinating 😃 . For any others interested here is the link. Looks like this was a compilation of earlier rites, but some of these may go back 100’s of years before the Pontificale was compiled
