I was lucky enough to be given a Breviary tonight! I was attempting to “sync” up my ribbons with the current week etc. and I was using the Universalis website and I noticed that I can’t find the readings from the Old Testament that it lists…actually I can’t find any OT readings (second week) furthermore, we used my friend’s Breviary tonight for evening prayer and I recalled that he had a different New Testament reading for evening prayer then the one that’s listed here. Is this a problem? Am I messing something up somewhere? The breviary that I was given is an old “new” Breviary…it was published in 1971 bu the Catholic Book Publishing Co… it’s called the “American Interim Breviary-Prayer of Christians.”

The version that you have, is the bridge between the four volume Liturgy of the Hours, that came out in 1974 and the old breviary that was used prior to 1971, when yours came out. That is the one we used, when I was in the seminary.

The 4 volume set has a much larger variety of readings that are used, esp. from the Saints and church fathers, which are used in the Office of Readings. many of the readings are not going to be the same since your older one, being only one volume just can’t offer the variety. Don’t worry that they are different, there is nothing wrong with praying from the old book - God is going to happy that you are praying and the interim brevairy is stilla good prayer to use.

Start using it daily and contemplate upgrading to the 4 volume set. If you don’t feel you can aford to buy the whole set at once, do what I did; buy one volume at a time, the one being used for the season you are in and get the next volume just before the next season starts.

God Bless you and good praying.
