Divineoffice.org is fantastic. Their apps are great and even give you the page numbers for the four or one volume Editions. There is even an audio for each hour which is helpful to learn how to pray the Office, or to pray on your way to work in the car like I did for awhile and make the best of my time. They have an active Facebook and twitter account if you are interested.

Hi all!

I am just starting to pray the liturgy of the hours hear and there and plan to pick it up “full time”. I will eventually buy a LOTH book with the hours for each day in it but until then I will use either divineoffice or universalis. I was wondering though why the readings and hours dont match up on the two sites for the same day? Are they both correct?

Zooman-

Congratulations on developing a great habit of daily prayer, prayer that is shared throughout the universal church!

While travelling last week I lost my Vol III LOTH:(, and as I am in the habit of praying it daily, felt lost. The divineoffice site seems to match up well, I just read it and don’t listen to the podcast.
They repeat antiphons more often than I do in individual recitation, but I just skip that and say it as usual. Seems like a good site.

Anybody have an extra Vol III out there they would be willing to sell me? Sure do miss it.

Thanks for those answers guys, they really helped.

I’m going to buy the ‘shorter Christian prayer’ book and start there.

Also, I’m due to get a better phone of the hols so hope to use the Universalis app.

I’ve noticed that there’s 2 more threads on LOTH currently going but I have 1 more question.

Does anyone here prayer matins? If so, at what time do you pray matins?

Thanks

5am, before sunrise.

Peace

Thanks Hazcompat

Let me ask something that’s confusing me.

What time do you pray lauds?

Do you do daytime prayer? If so, do you do terce around 9am?

Finally, do you add the invitatory to your matins prayers? (does that make sense) If so, how long does it take?

Many thanks

5 am (Enter the illegal trial of The Priest Jesus) Matins invitatory, office of readings, morning prayer (18 min)

Sunrise (enter the resurrection) daytime prayer (7min)

9am (enter Pilate condemns Jesus to death) (7min)

noon (Jesus nailed to the cross) (7min)

3pm (Jesus dies on the cross) (7min)

5pm (Jesus is laid in the tomb) evening prayer (18min)

Sunset/bedtime Compline (Jesus descends unto the dead) (7min)

not required…

Peace

My understanding is that in the reforms around the time of Vatican 2, and the Publication of the Divine Office in the form it exists today, the Offive of Matins was suppressed, it was replaced by The Office of Readings, which can be prayed at any time.
Those specific Orders whcih have Retained their seperate variants of the Divine Office may still have Matins.

Invitatory is said before first office of the day.

Dawn / (circa) 6am Lauds (Morning Prayer). Said at the start of your day. Ideally at Dawn.

Mid Morning (9am - 11am): Terse

Mid-day 12:00 Sext.

Mid - Afternoon: (circa 3pm) None.

Evening: after work is finished: Vespers. - Not before 5pm normally. may be later.

Bed-time. Compline. Whatever your bed time is. this might be after Mid-night.

Time of your own Choosing: Office Of Readings. (May be done before Dawn to replace Matins. - but this is not required) This can be used as a Vigil and is designed to be used that way in Choir.

I have now double checked in the General Instruction, and updated this post as linked to by a previous poster: See Chapter 2 of that document.

Among the Benedictines, Matins (aka Vigils) is still alive and well. At the abbey I’m associated with, 5 am. Some monasteries also do it by anticipation the previous evening, often combined with Compline, or separately. I say it upon first waking up in the morning, on most weekdays 5:30 am.
