I’m going to the liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts during Holy Week. I’m so excited to give it a go, first time ever going actually. What’s it like? Anyone have any stories? Can’t wait!

Remember, the Tabernacle will be empty, so, one does not genuflect upon entering the pew. One does bow to the Altar.

Enter in silence, leave in silence.

It is so beautiful, you will love it! I look forward to it ever Wednesday during Lent at my parish.

???

The Mass of the Pre Sanctified is held once each year, on Good Friday.

Perhaps your parish has a “Word and Communion” service on Wednesdays?

Great Lent, ahhhh, not Latin Rite 🙂

It is many states away to find a Byzantine Parish for us.

Are you talking about the Byzantine Liturgy? If so, we should move this to the Eastern Catholicism board?

Oh I didn’t realize it was a Byzantinian thing. My church is Western rite Anglo-Catholic so I just assumed it was part of the Roman liturgy.

I’ll flag my parent post to get it switched

I don’t see any reason why an Eastern rite liturgy would not be on topic for Liturgy and Sacraments.

Thanks @Elf01!

I flagged it already, so we’ll see what the administrators decide 🙂

There is a Mass of the Pre Sanctified in the Latin Rite, Good Friday Liturgy.

Confusing!!

Yeah but it’s just the one… and we don’t usually call it that. There is a recurring Liturgy of pre-sanctified gifts during the Byzantine Great Lent. I believe the rationale for both is the same… the Eucharist isn’t celebrated on particularly solemn penitential days (which is only Good Friday and Holy Saturday for Latins).

Right.

In the Byzantine Rite, the Eucharistic celebration does not generally take place on weekdays during Lent. Generally, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts occurs on Wednesdays and/or Fridays at the parish level, but it can occur on other days as well.

Do monasteries have a daily Liturgy of pre-sanctified gifts during Lent?
Just curious because I know monasteries will often have a daily Eucharistic Liturgy normally, as opposed to the typical Eastern parish.

In my parish, we have Presanctified Liturgy on Pure Monday (the First Day of the Great Fast which is 2 days before Pure/Ash Wednesday), Wednesdays & Fridays during the Great Fast. We also have Presanctified Liturgy on Great Monday, Great Tuesday and Great Wednesday (technically, Great and Holy Week is not part of the Great Fast).

Assuming from this forum and the exact term for the liturgy, I’d assume that it’s a byzantine church, not roman–so you don’t genuflect in any event!

In the East, we fast from the Divine Liturgy during the week, having only the presanctified liturgy on Wednesday and Friday (and there is the Institution of the Eucharist Liturgy on Holy Thursday).

It is, but the obvious confusion it caused . . . I immediately assumed it was Eastern!

To make it even more confusing, the Eastern presanctified liturgy used by Orthodox and EC was written by a pope! 😱🤯 [St. Gregory the Great]

And we don’t have a presanctifed on Good Friday, but rather a 12 gospel reading at noon (a couple of hours), and a burial service/procession in the evening.
Generally, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts occurs on Wednesdays and/or Fridays at the parish level, but it can occur on other days as well.
It would usually need a reason for any other day in Great Lent–it exists on those two days as an alleviation of the fast, as going completely without is too much!

Not daily, but W and F, for the reasons above (and on certain other days, as noted by @Margaret_Ann.
