Why do we have to live and die? It seems useless to me to watch TV and see people die.
My mom died 4 years ago and I still don’t understand why. What was the purpose? Why does a loving person die? Why are we created to live and die? What is the purpose for this?

I am 36 and truly feel like a 2 year old child when I think about this.

We weren’t created to die. Death is a result of Adam’s sin and our sin…and Jesus Christ, the Second Adam, came to defeat death by dying Himself and rising again, so that we can live forever with Him.

**The most loving person who ever lived voluntarily submitted to death.

To be conformed in all ways to her divine Son, so did the Theotokos.

We were not originally created for death, but for life eternal, which is available through Jesus Christ.

Because of the Resurrection of Christ, the separation of the soul from the body that results in physical death is only temporary.

When we say in the Creed, “I look for the Resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come,” what do you think we are talking about? Those words are LITERAL.**

It seems useless to me to watch TV and see people die.

Then don’t do something you consider useless.

I recommend a book by Father Benedict Groeschel called Arise From Darkness. Its an easy to read and understand book and has a Chapter on “When Death Robs Us”. This book has helped many people.

I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. It is heartbreaking to be separated from out loved ones. I agree with Psalter that we were not created to die. We were created to be united with God and each other for eternity. The choice of our first parents changed that. God graciously redeemed us with the blood of his Son.

Life, death, and resurrection.

My mother died 4 years ago of lung cancer. I know the why in one sense. She smokes cigarettes for nearly 50 years. My nephew died of leukemia at age 16. I do not know why he died and not someone else. I place my sorrow, pain, and lack of understanding in the arms of Our Lady. I trust that God knows all that needs to be known.

God be with you now and always.

I am so sorry about your mom. 😦

When I turned 40 I wondered if I would still have my mom with me when I turned 50? I doubt it, and that makes me so very sad.

I think death is awful. The only good thing is knowing we have the hope of being reunined in heaven.

“Four Falls of Man” hypothesis claims that man’s life span was shortened four times, due to sin: from everlasting to 1,000 (first fall: Adam’s), from 1,000 to 500 (second fall: the Earth around the time of Noah), from 500 to 250 (third fall) and finally from 250 to 120 (fourth fall brings in the law with Moses).

Essentially it was sin that reduced our lifespans.

Added: but even before sin brought this on, even though we lived long lifespans, we still died.
