This situation does not apply to me, but I’ve seen remarried people waiting on annulments before they could join the RCC, and I was wondering…

Can a remarried couple stay legally married, and raise their children and funtion as a family, but live as brother and sister? Could such a couple legitimately receive absoution and communion?

You kinda lost me, I don’t think I understand the question.

I think he means whether people who remarry without waiting for an annulment from the Church for their previous marriage and then seeking to join the RCC again; if they must abstain from sex, because their previous marriage has not yet been anulled. And whether they can receive communion due to this.

Tough question, never thought of it before.

Yes, under the guidance of their pastor they can do this.

I’ve actually wondered about this; is a couple required to abstain while waiting for their marrage to be convalidated (regardless as to whether there was an annulment involved; maybe they just didn’t marry in the Church originally)? It seems like they should but I’ve been wrong before.

Yes, it applies in this situation too.

It’s a possibility but must be done with spiritual direction.

Yes. As long as children are involved, it is in their best interest to remain in the same household but to abstain from relations until the situation is corrected.

As long as their is not abuse (physical, mental, verbal) on the part of one of the spouses. 🙂 And there are medical conditions where people have to “give it up” for awhile and do so.

Hello ! 🙂

The OP is about a couple who are married civilly, however their marriage is not recognized by the Church. As they are waiting for the appropriate process to be completed by the tribunal so that their marriage can be convalidated, they are to live as brother and sister. This is not about a couple seeking divorce and staying in the same household for the sake of the family. I hope this clears it up. 🙂

What if one of their annulments “falls through”? Would someone advocate them staying in this arrangement then? Will they life as “brother and sister” forever? Probably not. Those kids you talk of - are they theirs together or from their previous marriage - or both? If it’s from their previous marriage (hypothetically, lol), then I think it’s a HUGE disservice to their first and true spouse to stay with the second even if they are living as “brother and sister” - that is assuming the non-annuled first spouse even cares (I am assuming they do if they are Catholic and denied an annulment).

Now, I don’t want to lose anyone here, but I will probably confuse myself. Use the situation above, and say the man is in a new “marriage” and his old one is denied annulment - he has kids with his new “wife” - what should he do? Should he walk away from both his “wives”? Should he return to the first wife? Should he leave the new wife and new kids even if the first wife wants nothing to do with him? Can he even divorce the second one and remarry the 1st (the church would advocate him reuniting with his true spouse correct?) Uhh…the way my brain works :whacky:
