over the weekend on my paramedic shifts, we were called to a lake where a guy had crashed his jetski on the beach [but did not hurt himself]. apparantly he started having a heart attack and made a beeline for shore to get himself help.

we got there and i got his medical history, which was being treated for terminal cancer. he was undergoing treatments, but they werent expected to work.

thing is, his treatments made his heart extremely weak, and he said he was advised not to do anything too strenuous. he told me he said “to hell” with it, and wanted to do all the things he normally did. shortly thereafter on the ride to the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest, and i honored his DNR (do not resusciate) order.

my question is: what is the church teaching on situations like this? is a person REQUIRED to just sit in bed and wait to die because their most loved activities might kill them? is doing something you would normally do immoral when you know the consequenses might be death? i mean, the guy didnt intend for himself to die from an heart attack. seems to me he just said “ill do what i normally do, and let God decide if and when i die”.

honestly, i have the “Bonzaii Option” for me. that means if i ever get a terminal disease, i fly to Bonzaii Pipeline in hawaii and surf the biggest most dangerous waves in the world until:
  1. i die of my disease on the way to the beach
  2. my disease makes me to weak to swim and i drown having the time of my life
i completely understood where this guy was coming from, but i am not completely sure what the church teaches. i understand euthanaisia and suicide are wrong, but what about just continuing a normal life?

Continuing a normal life is quite acceptable. Taking up an extreme sport you never have tried before though may be over the top. 🙂 In his case…he loved it and wanted to continue. I see no problem with that.

Extreme means to extend or end life is where the line gets fuzzy.

Just remember you are not supposed to put God to foolish tests. If you were to jump off a roof and say, “Okay, Lord, Catch me if you want me to live!” that would be suicide.

picks up guitar

“I went … skyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy diving,
I went … Rocky Mountain climbing,
I went two point seven seconds on a bull names Fu Man Chu.”
