I’ve been on 3rd shift for close to 2 years. The original schedule I had was pretty nice, I had every Friday off and every other weekend off. I got into a good routine as far as my spiritual and sacramental life was concerned- I was able to get to Adoration regularly, i could usually attend one or two week day Masses, and since my parish offers Confession after daily Mass every Friday I had little problems going. A few months ago the schedule was changed to a 10 on 4 off, so now I work straight through the weekend and that’s made it increasingly difficult to even meet my weekly obligation.

I’m curious how others have dealt with 3rd or swing shift schedules, especially when it comes to your spiritual life and your family if you have one. I have a lot of downtime and so I read alot, pray a lot, but there are plenty of downsides to being up all night.

I used to work doing office cleaning at night, but I never worked late Saturday night/Sunday morning. Sometimes I would finish up just in time to go to 7am daily Mass at my parish.

That would be nice. I go to bed as soon as I get home and I have around a 45 minute commute, so if there was a daily Mass near where I work I would definitely try to get there. There is a Perpetual Adoration chapel about 15 minutes from work and sometimes I leave early to sit with the Lord, but that’s gotten harder as my kids are starting to have homework and everyone needs baths and all that good stuff.
