living wage

i have a business, some times i hire guys who are married. Do you have to pay a living wage right away? i do that with people who have seniority. also i hire people who are young but also married, and i always like to hire an extra guy or too. what is our obligation as christians.

You have a moral obligation to pay a just wage, not a living wage. A just wage is based on the obligations of the work that employee is doing.

All of this “living wage” talk is nothing more than communism. Recall the phrase “to each according to his needs, from each according to his abilities”? That’s vintage Karl Marx. We would have chaos if employers paid based on need and not on work. It panders to the baser instincts of human nature. If you always get paid what you need no matter what type of work you do, what would be the incentive to improve yourself?

Living wage was just a fad in liberal lawmaking (like dereg among conservatives). They tried it in my town but it failed. Some big cities have it and it’s pure politics, like minority business set-asides etc. I do government bids and the only thing that happens is I have another form to fill out.

Unfortunately some elements in the Church jumped on the Living Wage bandwagon for some reason, probably because we were all supposed to be working for social justice but ran out of good ideas. I’m getting pretty tired of these legislative fads that sweep the country. (Does anyone have an original idea?)

So we’re supposed to base wages on what it takes to support a family of four and they come up with some arbitrary number. Ridiculous! How do they know the spouse isn’t working, or the worker is a young adult with 6 roommates, or living at home and paying no rent.
