Is it normal during depression to not want to get better? I just feel stuck. To just want it all to end? Also this depression has been leading me farther and farther away from the Church. I can’t accept it. I’ve seen a therapist but not helpful. I can’t make myself care or want to change

Depression is hard for me to understand.
A friend of my who suffers from depression says that you cannot understand who you have never been through.
I would suggest to you to see a health care professional, but first and foremost, to pray to God. 🙏

You might need medication in addition to therapy, so you should probably go to see professionals who can help you in this way. You may also want to get checked out by your doctor, as there are medical conditions which can cause these types of feelings.

This is a cross, just as having diabetes or a broken leg. If you had a broken leg, you would probably not rely on prayer to fix it, you would go see a doctor, right?

In the same way, suffering from this severe a depression should be treated by medical personnel.

And with a remembered understanding that it may take time before you feel the good affects.

Prayers for you!

I agree with Annie. If you have clinical depression, this is really a question for your doctors.
It is not something that anyone here can really help you with, as we’re not supposed to give medical advice. And it can’t be fixed by prayer or religious practice.
Please talk to your doctor or mental health professional, and get some help.

God bless.

Shop for another therapist, too. Believe me, therapists are as unique as individual snowflakes, so don’t give up on finding one who resonates with you.

This is definitely true and a bad therapist can do much harm to a fragile mind.

Depression diminishes ones joy of living and distorts our thinking. Exercise is good.

Yes it is normal to feel stuck and powerless when depressed. I’ve struggled with it for many years. It runs in the family as an illness.

Yes find a good doctor. It is a relief just to see a doctor and talk about your struggles matter of factly.
Read good stuff. Talk with friends if possible, or a priest, or go to your bible study and share appropriately.

There are certain things I read or listen to when depressed. One of them is Romano Guardini, who suffered from severe depression especially in his youth. I love his book: https://www.amazon.com/Learning-Virtues-That-Lead-You/dp/0918477646

He has a profound sensitivity to the spiritual struggles we all endure. The chapters on the virtues of patience and acceptance are awesome.

And this is awesome by Henri Nouwen.

for someone who struggles with depression every single day of my life I know exactly how you feel and I myself had stayed away from church for a time being but with much prayer my heavenly father I am back in church I am feeling a lot better than I had been might you I still struggle each and every day and it’s not easy at times but when I feel like I’m getting into that situation I recite the rosary I do Bible studies at find something to get my mind on something else what is a struggle with it I’ve struggled with suicide attempts wanting to end my life and everything and with God’s help it helped me see that that does not solve anything so I pray for you and I know exactly how and what you were going through it’s not going to be easy it’s going to be an everyday thing for the rest of your life but know that our heavenly father is there for you know there is hotlines out there know that there are other people out there that has been in the situation that is any situation that you are so bless your heart I will pray for you each and every day.

Yeah I know where you’re coming from having had to deal with depression most of my life. I’m at the point where I might just leave the Church (again) too.

I think we need to ask why does depression
lead us to want to leave the Catholic Church?
Are we working too hard at being Catholic?
It seems like something is out of balance.
The same thing happens to me.

Praying for those who suffer from depression.
