While listening to a lenten mission on our local catholic radio station this morning, the speaker said that the day Jesus fed the masses with the 5 loaves and 2 fish and the day he walked on the water was the same day. I assumed they happened on different days. Can someone here enlighten me?

Thanks

Here is the context: Mt. 14:

[19] Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
[20] And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
[21] And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
[22] Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
[23] And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
[24] but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them.
[25] And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

It depends on how they measured time, I suppose. But why is it important, meaning no disrespect and not being sarcastic–what difference does it make?

I didn’t mean to imply it was terribly important in terms of the time frame, it was just a simple question out of pure curiosity.

The sequence of events are:

The feeding of the multitude:

Lk. 9:10-17; Mt. 14:13-21; Mk. 6:30-44; Jn. 6:1-14

Walking on water:

Mt. 14:22-33; Mk. 6:45-52; Jn. 6:15-21

Crossing the lake to the other side:

Mt. 14:34-36; Mk. 6:53-56

Bread of Life discourse:

Jn. 6:22-72

Ah, well someone who knows how time was measured in the culture in Jesus’ day would be able to sort it out for you. It all depends if the evening in question would be considered a part of the same day or as part of the next, you see. 😉

The walking on the water would have been the following day, whether time is calculated as we do (after midnight = start of new day) or as 1st century Jews did (sunset = start of new day).

There is another feeding in Matthew as well.

31 So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, and the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel. 32 And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. 33 And the disciples say unto him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude? 34 And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? But they said: Seven, and a few little fishes. 35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground.

36 And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the people. 37 And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took up seven baskets full, of what remained of the fragments. 38 And they that did eat, were four thousand men, beside children and women. 39 And having dismissed the multitude, he went up into a boat, and came into the coasts of Magedan.
