The acknowledgements in the U.S. version of the 4-volume Liturgy of the Hours state that all scripture passages are taken from the New American Bible 1970. But I have found a few places where the translations for the Office of Readings differ considerably from the NAB – for example. Monday of this week – Colossians 2:16-17:

LOH: No one is free to pass judgment on you in terms of what you eat or drink or what you do on yearly or monthly feasts, or on the sabbath. All these were but a shadow of things to come; the reality is the body of Christ.

NAB: Let no one, then, pass judgment on you in matters of food and drink or with regard to a festival or new moon or sabbath. These are shadows of things to come; the reality belongs to Christ.

So, what’s the deal?

The second quote is most probably from the 1986 Revised New Testament. The readings from the Liturgy of the Hours are taken from the original 1970 NT.

Yep. I have copies of both the original 1970 version of the NAB and the 1986 version of the NAB with revised New Testament and the Revised Psalms.
I just checked and the quote from the Liturgy of the Hours is from the orignal 1970 version.

Thank you so much. It is interesting that my copy of the NAB cites the copyright date as 1970 but has the translation I gave in my original post. Go figure.

Your are Welcome.

Make sure you are looking at the actual copyright information.

It should list the Old Testament, New Testament and Psalms seperately. The copyright dates should be 1970, 1986, and 1991 respectively. All should say that they are copyright by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD).

There are several editions of the NAB which contain additional commentary material. This would have it’s own copyright dates.

I like the NAB in the LoH better; I think the 1970 version is more literal, but that’s just my opinion. I still prefer the RSV-CE.

I really find it strange that the psalms used for the Liturgy and the LOTH are totally different…one would think they would mirror each other, I thought they were linked to each other…

They’re from the Grail translation.

The Grail Psalms are also used in the Masses in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and other English-speaking countries.

The US lectionaries use the 1970 NAB Psalms (which I think were quite okay).

I wish I they’d just reprint the entire 1970 NAB rather than “Revise” the thing. Well, maybe I can handle the Revised NT, but the 1991 Psalms must go!

In any case, I’m an RSV-CE fellow.

what about this strangeness, a dominican friar i know has a 4-part breviary that uses inclusive language, i have the 1 volume and its newer yet mine has no inlusive language. what is the deal?
