London police probe destruction of Haile Selassie statue

AFP July 2, 2020

London (AFP) - British police on Thursday said they were investigating the criminal damage of a statue of former Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, which was smashed in a London park.

The Metropolitan Police said it received a report of damage to the statue in Cannizaro Park, in Wimbledon, southwest London, on Tuesday afternoon.

The damage appeared to have been carried out by a group of about 100 people, most of them men, according to one eyewitness quoted by the domestic Press Association news agency.
Even Haile Selassie?? I mean, this is really going too far. I believe some articles indicate this is related to the protests going on in Ethiopia but still. Terrible.

If you’ve not read the novel “1984” you should. There was a scene in the book where the main character finds a picture that refutes the government’s propaganda. He shows it to his boss and the boss tells him to throw it into an incinerator. When that’s done the boss says something like, “Well, that never existed did it?”

From my viewpoint, this is what’s happening now. History is being deleted. New history is being written. Then they can say of the deleted history, “Well, that never existed did it?”

I think the libraries will be next.

I never knew that London had a statue of Hallie Selassie!
He lived here briefly before settling in Bath.

Yes, my understanding is that this has nothing to do with BLM and is rather a part of an ethnic conflict in Ethiopia in which the Oromo ethnic group claims to have been oppressed by Haile Selassie.

Doesn’t really matter if BLM is directly involved or not, it’s the same kind of iconoclasm that BLM is practicing.

It might be a different group, but it’s the same general goal… re-write history

My parents saw this coming 20 years ago and photocopied Margaret Sanger’s book so there would be a record of her eugenics beliefs.

Even Haile Selassie??
Quite right too. He’s obviously a white oppressor of black people. The same logic should now be applied to his acolyte Bob Marley as well as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Barack Obama.

This is unfair. It’s already been stated that this statue removal was due to Ethiopian ethnic conflicts. You’re deliberately conflating completely unrelated issues. It’s frustrating to see people on this forum so often interpret all global events within the very narrow, very specific lens of American left vs right politics.

Related to Selassie and Ethiopia:

"Today 5 May, 1952, is the twelfth anniversary of our independence. A day in which our Emperor, Haile Selassie, first freed his people, and all of Ethiopia from the foreign aggressor. This day opened a new era. This is the day that the enemy was conquered by force and the Emperor entered his capital city of Addis Abbaba.
So, this above basically says before we, the USA entered the war, Ethiopia was free… but then, they had another war with the foreign forces (the Italians and allies).

We will see where this goes.

Anyway, the Ethiopians and Colombians sent soldiers for the UN mission to Korea during that war as well as of course, more traditional powers like UK and Australia.

The iconoclasm movement is worldwide. There have been other instances in Europe.
