Long Car Trip...book suggestions?

My family is going down to Texas for seven days. Needless to say, a 12 hour car ride and hours of beach reading is being looked forward to incredibly after working extra hours to save up for this trip šŸ˜ƒ

The only problem is that I have no books to read. Does anyone have any good books to recommend to a female college student? I would love Catholic based books, but am open to most genres.

I really enjoyed Abby Johnsonā€™s book Unplanned, but it is intense. If you like history, Killing Lincoln or Killing Kennedy both by Bill Oā€™Reilly are very good. They read like novels but are factual, and are more focused on the events prior to the assassinations. I learned so much for those two books. If you want a religious book, I loved Life of Christ by Fulton Sheen. It is long, but not at all difficult to read.

I have to admit I had the first three as audiobooks as I cannot read in the car without getting sick.

P.S. I am in my early 20s just out of college :).
 
Thanks! I love history - my favorite era being Lincoln (presidency, assassination and conspiracies.) I have wanted to read Unplanned for a long time now, so I requested those three from my library.

Father Steve Jones on CA as a Contributor posted the title of a Book recently (I would use the search key to find out what the title was; I believe it has 14 volumes)!

Visiting your Local Catholic Bookshop for Christian books and stories of others to read; alternatively printing off the net some Christian experiences of Devout Catholics and Christians to read out to your Family (often during our busy lives we do not find time to read about other Christians accounts and stories of their lives serving others; in particular long term dedicated Aid workers around the World

Do not forget to place Jesus Holy Images and a Saint Christopher in your vehicle
 
I was going to suggest the I. Ilibigiza book as well.

Warren Carrollā€™s History of Christendom, in several volumes, might be an interesting choice - - I mean choose a volume. Reads pretty well, I think, although it is not a novel of course. The endnotes are like another book!

I am reading ā€œThe Hiding Placeā€ by Corrie ten Boom, about faith and WWII. Short but may be of interest. Amazing and inspiring faith.
 
I really enjoy the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon ā€“ itā€™s history, romance, time travelā€¦ It is not for everyone. People either love it or hate it, thereā€™s very little in between. Theyā€™re long (and thereā€™s seven of them with No. 8 coming out next spring).

While theyā€™re not Catholic the Mark of the Lion books by Francine Rivers is amazing ā€“ the first two books. I didnā€™t like the third one because it really wasnā€™t part of the series though it was touted as being part of it. Itā€™s about the Jewish Christians being persecuted in Rome. AMAZING BOOK! Her book Redeeming Love is also amazing. Itā€™s the story of Hosea put into a novel.

I also enjoyed the Harry Potter series ā€“ I only read them a couple of years ago (Iā€™m 43) and found a lot of historical allusion in them. Again, not for everyone; but I had avoided them for years just out of pure disinterest; and once I started reading them, I couldnā€™t put them down.

Youā€™re welcome! I really enjoyed all of them.

Someone also mentioned Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, and I agree, it is an amazing book. My pastorā€™s wife loaned it to me and I was surprised how much I liked it :).

Have a great vacation! This reminds me I should see what audiobooks I have for an upcoming trip.
 
James Herriotā€™s All Creatures Great and Small series is timeless, serious, humorous, and a delight to read. Especially if you love animals, itā€™s a great series. Itā€™s written by a British (well, actually Scottish, but he was residing in England at the time) farm veterinarian and is filled with stories about his patients and clients. They are written beautifully and are about mankind as much as animals and farm life. They have some technical terminology (great for me) but everybody I know whoā€™s read them loves them. They are written for the average guy or gal, city or rural-bred.

There are not too many books out there that can make me laugh and cry in the same chapter. They really hit close to home for me.

I just loved those books! šŸ‘ Knowing England as I now do, makes me think I need to go back and re-read them from my current vantage point. I loved them years before I ever went to England (havenā€™t gotten up to Scotland yet šŸ˜¦ ) but I am sure I will find more depth in them now. Thanks for the reminder!

Here are a few of my favorite books, by category:

General Fiction:
  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain
  • Life on the Mississippi, by Mark Twain (actually more non-fiction than fiction, but it is a bit of both, and is more likely to be categorized as fiction in a book store)
  • Roughing It, by Mark Twain (same fiction/non-fiction comment as the previous book)
  • any novel by Agatha Christie
  • A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens (extremely slow going through the first two-thirds of the book, but the end is wonderful)
  • For lighter reading: any collection of Peanuts or Calvin & Hobbes comics
General Non-Fiction:
  • Basic Economics, by Thomas Sowell
  • Any book of recreational mathematics by Martin Gardner (if you are interested in mathematics, puzzles, brain teasers, etc.)
  • The Crusader, by Paul Kengor (a chronicle of Ronald Reaganā€™s life-long opposition to Communism)
Catholic Fiction:
  • The Spear, by Louis de Wohl
  • The Last Crusader, by Louis de Wohl
