I just started a new job with a 1.5 hr commute one way. My old job was 45 minutes so I’d usually say a Rosary, often followed by the DMC the turn on Ave Maria Radio to catch Called to Communion. I generally wouldn’t listen to Ave Maria on the way home. I worked 3rd so on the way home Teresa Tomeo was on. I respect her conviction, all she does for the pro-life movement and her bulldog-like professionalism, it’s just not my cup of tea. I’m looking for some audiobooks or podcasts or other stuff I can use to help sanctify what’s going to be a relatively large chunk of my day, beyond praying the Rosary. I’m partial to church history and theology, but any recommendations are welcome. Also preferably something I can download or buy as a CD vs streaming. Thanks!

If you could get a CD of it, I’d recommend “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist” by Dr. Brant Pitre. He tries to explain the precursors to the Eucharist and the traditions of the Passover in Jesus’ time.

That book is on my list and I totally forgot about it. Good suggestion, thanks!

I love this topic! I live in the city and also have a long commute.

Strongly recommend the phone app Audible.com.
  • you probably are already a member because it’s owned by amazon.
  • you can download through WiFi so no problem with streaming.
  • you can buy the audio books 1 by 1 or get their $15 dollar a month plan which was worth it for me.
Audiobooks I recommend
  1. Life is worth living part1 and part 2 by Fulton Sheen
  2. Mother Angelica The remarkable story of a nun, her nerve and a network of miracles.
  3. The autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux.
  4. Tattoos of the Heart
  5. Any audiobook by Scott hahn

If you like History, Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcast is a must.

First, that’s a long a** commute. Three hours a day ? !
Sixty hours per month.
That’s around 32 days inside your car a year.
I kinda know the feeling - (50 minute commute)
It’s cool how you want to use that time wisely.

I could NEVER concentrate on audio books. Tried. For years.
One thing I do - is hold the rosary in my hand.
Remember - don’t try to cram - give your farmland rest from plowing and sowing -

I often said " repeaters " - find a scripture - and mantra it - over and over -
out loud - have a small notebook - with five - ten of them -
Then change em out after a week - with new ones.

Some podcasts:
  • Catholic Answers (daily show and ‘Focus’)
  • Institute of Catholic Culture (great for history and theology)
  • Matt Fradd, ‘Pints with Aquinas’
  • Patrick Coffin
  • Peter Kreeft (philosophy and theology)
  • Journey Home
You can also get free audio books. One source is https://librivox.org. I listened to many G. K. Chesterton books this way. You can also find many of Hilaire Belloc‘s works on there. He has several books that are history from a Catholic perspective.

If you are willing to purchase books then I enjoy Peter Kreeft’s audio books.

You might like Fr John Riccardo’s. Christ is the Answer program. He is a priest out of the Detroit area and his podcasts are on U-tube. I think he’s awesome, possibly the Fulton Sheen of our generation.

PwA I strongly second… Also, Brett McKay’s Art of Manliness is a good one… Secular, but still good

See if your public library offers Overdrive or Hoopla Digital or a similar program. It allows the library card holders to download audio books for free!

Hoopla has a good selection of religious audio books.

https://librivox.org/ has many books, I’d start with “Lord Of The World”.

Some good podcasts are:
UMD Newman Catholic Campus Ministry (Fr. Mike Schmitz)
Messy Parenting
The Fr. Mike Schmitz Podcast (audio only version of his weekly videos from Ascension Press)
Pints With Aquinas
Catholic Answers Live
Catholic Stuff You Should Know
The Catholic Podcast (just started a few weeks ago)

Truth and Life…a dramatization of the New Testament following the RSV2CE.

Can be purchased as CD, MP3, or as download on Ave Maria Radio and EWTN apps.

Fr. Ripperger has numerous podcasts that are so informative. I highly recommend him! https://sentrad.org/multimedia/

There’s also YouTube videos under “Sensus Fidelium” which he contributes to as well as other traditional priests.

Truth and Life has their own bible app as well. It is quite good.

His podcast was key in my returning to the Church. I’m in the same archdiocese as he is, just geographically opposite ends. He’s great!

I’ve purchased and listened to the Blackstone Audio audiobooks for Mere Christianity, Orthodoxy, and The Everlasting Man. They are available on iTunes.

It’s a hike, an unfortunate result of where I live and my profession. The plan is to move closer next year. I don’t mind a bit of a drive, it gives me time to decompress from work and I have no excuses for not getting in a daily Rosary.
