I am currently discerning to be a sister or a nun, however I am in the military and will soon be going overseas for 3 years. I know I should have a spiritual director to help with my discernment, but with moving around all the time I won’t be able to meet with anyone regularly. Does anyone know if it’s possible to receive spiritual direction where the director and myself could correspond by mail or e-mail (I’m not sure if I’ll be able to afford international phone service…don’t know where I’m going yet). Maybe this is a dumb question, but I appreciate any help. God Bless.

You should be able to receive Spiritual Direction via email etc. as your circumstances are special. You should speak to a good priest and ask his advice on it and maybe he could recommend someone to you. Good luck with deciding on your vocation. I will pray for you and keep safe when you are overseas.🙂 :signofcross:

I would suggest a spiritual director who has experience doing it through email or whatever means are available to you. You might also use a priest/chaplain as a periodic (in person) possibility if he has had training. One sister I know rather well who would be willing to explore spiritual direction with you can be reached at antoinette@benedictine.com Also, pray that God will lead you to a spiritual director. Thank you both. I should mention that when I leave I could be at any US embassy, and will be at several different places. There will not necessarily be a chaplain around very often.

Hello
As for communication, you may look into a Voice over IP (VoIP–internet phone) service available. There are some free ones and some very cheap ones (about $25 for unlimited service). You would need high speed internet as well. Best wishes as you head overseas…the Air Force hasn’t sent me yet.

God Bless,
