check out this site-- www.independent-catholic.org (forgive me if this post doesn’t take you there directly…if you cannot automatically go to the site–just google it?)

I never heard of this. Maybe I’m naive…but, this just kinda jumped out at me when doing a google search on some Catholic art. If they are not in communion with the RCC…then does this mean that if one were to take Communion, we would be commiting a sin? Not that I am interested in this whatsoever, just curious. How can they be Catholic, yet deviate from the Vatican?? Help.:o

The mission of The Independent Catholic Church is to reach out to former Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Anglicans who are presently unchurched for any reason and are searching for an authentic orthodox catholic church home that retains the truths taught by the undivided Church of the first 1000 years. We welcome all Catholic, Orthodox, or Anglican Clergy and jusidictions who share our traditional and conservative beliefs as contained in the “Statement of Union” between then Archbishop Arnold Mathew and the Holy Orthodox Church of Beirut, in the Patriarchate of Antioch to join with us as independent autonomous churches in communion by reason of our common faith.

The Independent Catholic Church, while not in communion with Rome, Constantinople, or Canterbury, prays for the day when we will put our differences aside and once again be completely one. We are truly Catholic because we hold to the same faith handed down to us by the apostles which has been safeguarded by bishops in apostolic succession throughout the centuries. Because of this, we believe that the marks of the church — one, holy, catholic, apostolic — are imprinted on us.

Independent Catholic Churches are autonomous and autocephalous Catholic parishes, missions, dioceses and jurisdictions following the church model of St. Ignatius of Antioch whereby Catholicism is a “communion of communities”. Therefore, the Independent Catholic Church was, is now, and ever shall remain an authentic expression of the orthodox Catholic faith and the one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

They are schismatics. It’s one of the three ways to break away from the Church (the others being heresy and apostasy). They proclaim themselves Catholic, but are not in communion with Rome. Their sacraments are not considered valid by the RCC, and for a Roman Catholic to receive a sacrament from a schismatic church would be an endorsement of that schism and therefore sinful.
