ORIGIN OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

By David J. Riggs

There is no specific exact date for the beginning of the Catholic Church. However, the Papacy (and that which grew out of it) has already fulfilled the prophecy in 2 Thess. 2:3-12. We quote the prophecy in full:

“Let no one deceive you in any way, for the day of the Lord will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and is exalted above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he sits in the temple of God and gives himself out as if he were God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you, I used to tell you these things? And now you know what restrains him, that he may be revealed in his proper time. For the mystery of iniquity is already at work; provided only that he who is at present restraining it, does still restrain, until he is gotten out of the way. And then the wicked one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of his mouth and will destroy with the brightness of his coming. And his coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all wicked deception to those who are perishing. For they have not received the love of truth that they might be saved. Therefore God sends them a misleading influence that they may believe falsehood, that all may be judged who have not believed the truth, but have preferred wickedness.”

The Papacy, and the error proceeding from it, fulfills the above prophecy because it agrees in all the following points:

  1. *]It has one official man as it head, and the arrogance of its claims are centered in him.
*]That man came with and out of an apostasy, the very kind the apostles describe elsewhere (1 Tim. 4:1-3; Acts 20:28-31; 2 Pet. 2:1-3).
*]He exalts himself against all that is called God; i.e., he is addressed by terms (Pope, Supreme Pontiff, Holy Father, etc.) which belong only to God.
*]He sits in the temple of God, i.e., his sphere of dominion is in the church.
*]His appearance was hindered by some force in Paul’s time (2 Thess. 2:6-7); i.e., when the bishops of Rome began to assert power, they were in conflict with the Roman civil government which dominated and persecuted; however, when the Roman empire collapsed, the Roman church became powerful.
*]The mystery of iniquity was already working in Paul’s day (2 Thess. 2:7) and would continue until the Lord’s coming (2 Thess. 2:8).
*]The Lord shall destroy him with the brightness of His coming (2 Thess. 2:8). Only by a continual succession of these men of sin could be this possible.
*]The apostasy would produce fraudulent miracles, signs and wonders; i.e., supposed cures brought about by relics and shrines.
*]The whole system is perfected through people’s lack of love for truth (2 Thess. 2:10); i.e., Catholics do not love and respect the holy Scriptures as the only authority in religion, but rely on the Pope along with the Scriptures.

The above clearly reveals the origin of the Catholic Church. It had its beginning in Paul’s day (2 Thess. 2:7) and will continue until the Lords returns (2 Thess. 2:8). The Catholic Church is not the one church revealed in the Bible, but is the great “falling away” predicted in it. May the Lord help us to turn from all the false teachings of the great apostasy and become simple New Testament Christians, lovers of truth, followers of Christ, and members of His one true church.

THey guy isn’t smart enough to be able to distinguish the Pope from the Anti-Christ…this filth is the great apostasy.

Same old, same old. Nothing too terribly insightful about this rant. Every accusation has been answered on this board 10 times over. It sounds as if he’s the one whose “whole system is perfected through people’s lack of love for truth”.

He is only one in a long line of anti-Catholic bigots and morons.

Morons. Exactly. They wouldn’t know the truth if it hit them in the face. Actually, they HAVE been hit in the face with it. They refuse to accept it, because it goes against what they, personally, want to believe. And you’re right, it is sickening.

Do we not bring ourselves to this misguided persons level by calling names and belittling? Did not Christ tell us to turn the other cheek seventy times seven? Has anyone gone toe to toe with this soul to help him see the misconceptions of his ways?

The real message in this rant is that we are riding a crest; the groundswell of a new revival of the Church has begun and it is being fueled by the passions of the laity. This is our Church, and we have been given tools to defend it, weapons to protect it, and the compassionate means to heal those who persecuted Mother Church. But the easy route is now always the best, the Way of Christ and the teachings past down through traditions and Traditions is the only path to truth and light.

But this is only my humble opinion…
Mark Meyers
"Not many men want to die to their lower selves; it costs so much. Some prefer to have a cosmic religion, which neither puts restraint on their pride nor curbs their passions." Bishop Fulton Sheen

Oh well … when you’ve got the truth, be prepared for stuff like this.

Boy! … is that guy in for a shock! hahaha

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints shares this belief; it is the foundation of their beliefs. The irony of that is that Mr. Riggs (“Dr.” Riggs) would accuse the Mormons of being a cult.

So, there you have it.

I always look to the motivation - if the teller of this story is a poor misinformed waif, then I tend to feel a little sorry for them.

What gets my goat is this guy in his $600 shoes and his $1,200 suits following an article like this with an appeal for old people to send in “contributions, to further the cause of this ministry” from their fixed-pensions and social security checks.

That is the real evil and the real apostacy - the preying on the old and the unenlightened by the slick and the deceptive.

One need to judge this only by its fruit.

Forgive me, but didn’t Jesus Himself resort to name-calling? I submit for your review:

Matt 12:34 “You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Matt 23:33 “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?”

Matt 23:13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in.”

Luke 13:15 “*Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! * Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his *** from the manger, and lead it away to water it?”

John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

of course we aren’t Jesus. He also tells us not to judge meanwhile He is the judge of the living and the dead.

WOW! Talk about fond memories of when I was a CHILD reading Juvenile Litererature! 😃

I’ve read that litany in various forms since I was like12 years old…and somehow always “knew” without being informed of my faith that it was bogus stuff…I’m now in my 30s…kinda funny in a sad way that grown people still believe that stuff…even intelligent Protestants have moved beyond the “Pope is anti christ” ditribes in their Faith Journey.

My heart moves with compassion for people such as this. He really, in his heart of hearts, believes that what he’s saying is true. He believes, as anti-Catholics do, that he knows what the Church “really” teaches…that he knows our faith even better than we do. He is not entirely to blame. One can only know what he is taught. This is what he’s been taught. Anti-Catholics are not born, they are made. It’s a very sad thing, but it’s not like Jesus didn’t warn us this would happen.

Stay strong fellow Catholics. We can be confident in the truth!

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

There is a religious communion claiming a divine commission, and holding all other religious bodies around it heretical or infidel; it is a well-organized, well-disciplined body; it is a sort of secret society, binding together its members by influences and by engagements which it is difficult for strangers to ascertain. It is spread over the known world; it may be weak or insignificant locally, but it is strong on the whole from its continuity; it may be smaller than all other religious bodies together, but is larger than each separately. It is a natural enemy to governments external to itself; it is intolerant and engrossing, and tends to a new modelling of society; it breaks laws, it divides families. It is a gross superstition; it is charged with the foulest crimes; it is despised by the intellect of the day; it is frightful to the imagination of the many. And there is but one communion such.
John Henry Newman.

This accusation against the Church could be made by either a second century Roman or a twenty-first century Evangelical. There is only one possible object of the accusation. Would anyone like to discuss the Church’s continuity of its type with this cretin?

Justin

Possibly because there is no difference…

You are either a sad case, or a poor comedian.

The only difference in this guy’s fiction and some of the Southern Fundamentalists is this guy used “spell check”. SameO- sameO.

Just read Matt16:v17 - 19. Jesus to (Simon Bar Jonah) Chephas ( in Aramaic) it is Petros in Greek, Peter in English. Jesus gave him a new name which in Jewish custom meant that Peter was to have a new “job”. And Jesus promised He would be with the Church until the end.👍
