Myself and another person have been wrongly accused of stealing from our church. The pastor knows that we are not guilty but the person that accused us is a well respected person in our Parish and people believe him and he tells many people this. We are new but are feeling very persecuted by the rumors – I know there is a bible verse that would fit this situation - meaning not to gossp and spread lies but I am having trouble finding it. Can you help me with this? thank You

How about the Ninth Commandment: Thou shall not bear false witness against another, which is a Mortal sin?

Well, the eighth Commandment (“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor”) should suffice in this case, but there are many verses regarding gossip and lies. Here’s a good one: “He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.” Proverbs 10:18

MATT 7:1-5,12 “Stop judging that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your eye? How can you say to your brother,’ Let me remove theat splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye? You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.”

Psalm 140

1 Rescue me, LORD, from evildoers;
protect me from the violent,
2 who devise evil plans in their hearts
and stir up war every day.
3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s;
the poison of vipers is on their lips.**

4 Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked;
protect me from the violent,
who devise ways to trip my feet.
5 The arrogant have hidden a snare for me;
they have spread out the cords of their net
and have set traps for me along my path.

6 I say to the LORD, “You are my God.”
Hear, LORD, my cry for mercy.
7 Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer,
you shield my head in the day of battle.
8 Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD;
do not let their plans succeed.

9 Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;
may the mischief of their lips engulf them.
10 May burning coals fall on them;
may they be thrown into the fire,
into miry pits, never to rise.
11 May slanderers not be established in the land;
may disaster hunt down the violent.

12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor
and upholds the cause of the needy.
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name,
and the upright will live in your presence.
Though I find 141, 142 and 143 are very applicable too.**

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness which is of me, saith the LORD. - Isaiah 54:17

Someone (sorry I didn’t get his name) had this as his signature.
