While that is certainly a reasonable suggestion, I think it also a good idea to not narrow ones studies to solely those sources as they are (and rightfully so) focused on positioning the LDS church as the one and only true church of God.

By examining other more objective sources as well, one might expect to come to a better informed conclusion about this.(one way or the other.)

Just to be fair, I think that you will find many Mormons who after reading any and every thing they can find on Mormonism pro or con will still choose to believe in it. (as is their right)

Many of us here though find the available evidence to convincingly support the teachings of the RCC.

Just out of curiosity, is it your position that available evidence should be the only criteria in choosing ones religion? Does guidance from the Spirit of God play any part in the decision or is it purely an academic exercise?

Not having the time to do much in-depth study of Mormonism on my own, I purchased a copy of Mormonism for Dummies, by two professing LDS, almost as soon as it was published. The publisher did such a decent job finding two great authors for Catholicism for Dummies–an excellent introduction to the Catholic faith–that I hoped it would do the same with the LDS book, too.

Has anyone else read Mormonism for Dummies? Can you give me your “take” on it?

Thanks!
I bought the book as soon as it came out, too. While I haven’t read it cover to cover, I agree with you that it’s accurate and well-written.

I would also highly recommend Latter Days by Coke Newell. It’s a excellent blend of history and doctrine and Newell is an exceptional writer. I can guarantee it will hold your interest.

I guess that it depends on your goal here. If you are interested in the history of it you might find the official history of the church a good read. (lengthy but informative)

If you want to understand doctrinal development then I would suggest the teachings of the prophet joseph smith, followed by the journal of discourses, followed by doctrines of salvation and end up with Mormon doctrine. (and yes you would need to include the “standard works” in there as well)

If you want a social perspective then perhaps the various writings of LeGrand Richards and Mark E. Petersen would be in order and should be followed by Gordon B. Hinckley’s standing for something. Ezra T. Bensons an enemy hath done this is kind of interesting in this area as well.

Those would be the primary LDS sources worth looking at. If you just want a quick peek on a particular subject then the various church lesson manuals are available at the LDS website and they have an easy to use search engine there. you can cross check it with conference talks and LDS scriptures there as well.

If you are looking at Mormon apologetics then I would stay with Hugh Nibley’s various writings. (as opposed to FAIR, FARMS or jeflindsay)

He’s pretty straightforward and frequently provides an interesting viewpoint.
