Hi:

I’m looking to buy a good Catholic bible with good footnotes, etc as a personal bible for me. Any recommendations?

Read this thread: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=1981

though you might get more than you bargained for!

My quick answer: if you are only going to get one, get the New American Bible, because it’s what is used at Mass (assuming you’re in the U.S.)

The translations I actually think are the best are the Jerusalem Bible (more beautiful) and the RSV catholic edition (good study text, since it’s very literal).

the NRSV is the closest to the original text that scripture scholars come to in english. for those who are concerned about gender-inclusive text, there is some of this, i.e. “brothers and sisters” but does not “corrupt” the actual translation when it calls for the use of “brother” or “man” in reference to any one individual. the new oxford study bible is also very well done–extensive footnotes and commentary but can run a little steep. stay away from translations like New Living or KJV because the text used is corrupt and biased. the New Jerusalem flows well and is more poetic. It tends to stay on track as far as translation goes.

The Douay-Rheims is beautiful, the footnotes are solidly Catholic, and it’s translate from the Church’s official Bible, the Latin Vulgate.

The other good one is the Navarre Bible, published by Scepter Press.
