Obviously I would like a good Catholic understanding. I’ve seen Hilaire Belloc’s book. Is it a good one? Any other recommendations?

There is a new book out called God’s War. I don’t know if it is good or not, but would be interested to see what anyone has to write about it.

A generally favorable review of God’s War appeared in the December issue of First Things. firstthings.com/article.php3?id_article=5379&var_recherche=runciman
But I get the sense that it is a book that should be read critically, rather than allowing yourself to be immersed. It might be better as a second book rather than an introduction.

Amazon.com has a slough of favorable blurbs about the book. I’ve not seen Amazon use so many for any other book.
