Yes, I can recommend two first-rate comedies, both by the same director, Bruno Barreto, though with a thirty-year gap between them.
Dona Flor e seus dois maridos (Dona Flor and her two husbands), released in 1976. A beautiful young woman, played by Sonia Braga, is left a widow when her husband, a boozer and gambler whom she loves passionately, collapses and dies during Carnival. She remarries, after a time. Her second husband is a steady, hardworking dullard. One night the first husband reappears as a ghost … I won’t tell you any more, so as not to spoil it.
O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta (Romeo and Juliet Get Married), released in 2005. Set in present-day Sao Paulo, the antagonism between the two families is that they support rival soccer teams. Juliet is the women’s soccer coach at Palmeiras, where her father is one of the directors. Romeo is a widower with a teenage son and a sharp-tempered grandmother, all three of them fanatical supporters of Corinthians. To give you an idea of the kind of comedy it is, if it had been a Hollywood production, Juliet’s father would be played by Walter Matthau and Romeo’s grandmother by Ruth Gordon.
