I travel to Houston sometimes to visit family. One parish there that I have enjoyed going to is Our Lady of Walsingham. It’s a little bit of a drive, but I enjoy the liturgy, and I have been to the co-Cathedral on Sunday evening. I have some college friends who attend Vianney over in Katy, and like it there. I’ve also heard good things about St. Cyril of Alexandria, where Fr. Mario Arroyo is the pastor - he was assigned to our Houston parish one summer when I was an altar boy, and I remember him well. Fr. Mario Arroyo isn’t afraid to give long sermons that make his congregation think.

I don’t mind the parish that my mother and one of my brothers attend (actually, I like it more now than I did 10 years ago - liturgical abuses have been minimized, and the newer pastor seems to me much stronger than the two pastors that were there in the 80s and 90s), but I would like to see if there are some other parishes worth mentioning, as far as homilies, reverence, etc. I haven’t been to Annunciation which is across from Minute Maid Park, but I’ve heard good things about it. One of my brothers likes to attend St. Therese in Memorial Park, because he likes the homilies by the priest there, and my brother feels that he commands a “manly” presence.

Feel free to share. This should help others too. I’ve seen other threads asking for parish recommendations in geographical areas of the country as well. Thank you.

Well… You don’t say where you are. You say OLW is a bit of a drive but then mention SJV (which is not in Katy) and St Cyril, which are father out than OLW.

There are so many parishes in H, and I can’t think of any I wouldn’t recommend.

Holy Rosary downtown is very nice. SJV is awesome but you’ve been there (I’m partial as that was my parish whe I lived there).

But it would be helpful to know if you’re on the west side, north or northwest, southwest, inside the loop or what.

1KE:

Thanks. I enjoy reading your posts and sharing knowledge. Honestly, I lived south of Houston as a kid, between Houston and Galveston. I have college friends who go to SJV, but I haven’t gone to Mass there with them. Most of the time when I visit, I attend Mass in Clear Lake, but I like the Anglican Ordinariate parish, which is Our Lady of Walsingham.

I have a brother who lives in the Heights, and he likes St. Therese in Memorial Park, even though some other parishes are closer. These days, most priests don’t care how far one lives from a parish, but the fact that one is present and properly disposed for Mass.

St Anne inside the loop is a beautiful church, and bonus of being near awesome restaurants… But serious parking issues. St Mike’s in the Galleria area is very popular with young adults and Msgr Rossi is a great homilist. SJV is also great, Fr Troy is solid. Hike all the way out to Christ the Redeemer for Fr. Sean H.

I personally like Holy Rosary downtown, if you like the altar rail go there or Annunciation. They do the NO in Latin as well as English (and Vietnamese) at Holy Rosary. Annunciation is a beautiful church, and they have the EF there and a Latin NO as well as English NO.

I think you should do the downtown churches at least once. If you have not been to the new cathedral, go see it.

I know nothing about churches in the CL area… I was a west side gal, attended SJV, and have been: to St Cyril, St Justin Martyr, St Cecelia, St. Thomas More, Christ the Redeemer, St. Anne, Assumption, St. John Neumann, St. Theresa, St. Vincent De Paul, Holy Rosary, Annunciation, Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, St. Monica, St.Martha in Kingwood, St. Lawrence in Sugar Land, and Epiphany and St. Bart in Katy. Probably some others I can’t recall.

When I miss Divine Liturgy at St. John Chrysostom, I usually go to St. Helen’s in Pearland. However, I do like Holy Rosary. The Church is beautiful and the Masses there are conducted reverently.

1ke and Ryan:

Thanks. I have been to the Co-Cathedral for Sunday evening Mass, and it was nice. I do want to try going to Annunciation sometime.

As far as Clear Lake, I grew up at St. Paul’s in Nassau Bay. That’s the parish I referred to in my introduction, and the newer pastor (since 2009 or 2010) has IMHO helped facilitate some housecleaning that IMHO was needed. This current pastor IMHO is doing his best, and although he has taken some heat, I respect him, and I do find a more reverent liturgy and a congregation that is more faithful and more reverent there than I did as a kid under previous leadership.

Ryan, I met a seminarian who was a parishioner at St. Helen’s in Pearland - I’ve heard that’s a good place too.

I hope this has been productive.
