I have never formally studied philosophy and would like to get a good grounding and have no idea of where to begin can any of you offer some suggestions?

Others will probably give you particular books.

Perhaps an easy begining would be to google a few words and follow the leads you find.

Philosophy: logical analysis of the principles underlying conduct, thought, knowledge, and the nature of the universe: included in philosophy are:
  • ethics,
  • aesthetics,
  • logic,
  • epistemology,
  • metaphysics,
METAPHYSICS: the branch of philosophy that deals with first principles and seeks to explain the nature of being or reality (ontology) and of the origin and structure of the universe (cosmology): it is closely associated with the study of the nature of knowledge ( epistemology)

May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Hands down, I would recommend the philosophy series authored by D.Q. McInerny. Start with “Being Logical” and go from there.

He has taught philosophy courses at the Fraternity of St Peter seminary for years. The Fraternity of St Peter priests train for the Tridentine Mass, but they are in full communion with Rome.

God bless you,

If you are an adult, you might try a local Catholic University. Many of them have an extension service that offers evening classes in just about everything. I would suggest a basic survey course in Philosophy, one that is usually required in pursuing a Batchelor of Arts degree. It will prepare you for any further excursions in the subject that you may desire
By taking the course at a Catholic rather than a secular University you will be protected from possible heretical teaching.
