Hi I’m 23 and as I said on another thread, have just lost my mom to metastatic breast cancer. I was very close to her so am feeling this loss immensely, as well as wondering how to support the rest of my family through their grief (my brothers, dad and nan): I was wondering if anybody knows of any good Catholic books that might be good to read to help guide me through this grief? Also just any words of wisdom for what I should do, at the moment it feels pretty surreal, like she’s just away in hospital and will be home soon. We haven’t had the funeral yet though, and am kind of dreading it. I find it hard to think of my mom as someone who is dead. Thanks in advance.

Understanding Your Grief by Dr. Alan Wolfelt came recommended during a retreat last spring that had grieving as one of the 4 themes. I would also suggest you could reach out to Sr. Connie Kramer, SP who led that retreat; she’s quite the expert on the topic, both from study and experience. She composed this prayer that I like:

You should be able to get in touch with her via the contact information at the bottom of that page.

Thank you for this - and that is a nice way to look at it. I really don’t think of my mom as dead - it feels too strange. I think she is alive in a different way, like you say. Thank you for the prayer.

Thank you so much for the prayer and contact - I really appreciate it!

And she is alive in a different way. God bless you and your family. Pray for her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed. Having masses said for her, too, helps with the grieving process and may help her, too. It stinks but God will be with you.

I like Making Sense out of Suffering by Kreeft. It is a dialogue format about why we have to suffer. It may not appeal to everyone. C.S. Lewis’ A Grief Observed is also a rather powerful little book. For a more emotional appeal, Jeff Cavins has a series on Amazing Grace for Those Who Suffer.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Without a doubt read A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis.

I have ordered this for my dad but may get a copy myself - thank you!
