Our son will graduate from high school next year. Since he has no plans to attend a 4 yr school (he takes community college courses right now), I’m looking into the possibility of a year of service. I have info about NET teams and Regnum Christi co-workers. With both organizations, kids can give a year (or 2) of service to the Church. Does anyone know of other organizations? How about overseas missions?

My husband has a Protestant cousin who was in an organization where kids could go abroad and work for a year. Get a job, rent an apartment etc. I think my son would LOVE that, but I don’t know of a similar Catholic organization. If anyone has suggestions or has participated in Catholic missions (long term- a year or so), please let me know. Thanks! --KCT

I am interested too, only I’m interested in more short-term missions.

I think Regnum Christi is the women’s counterpart to the Legionaires of Christ. I know that both Regnum Christi has women who do what you are describing and Legionaires of Christ have young men doing similar things. I believe the term of service is one year and the volunteers (at least the ones I know) assist in outreach to Catholic youth in high schools and colleges in the United States and other countries. I’ll bet you can find more information via an internet search.

RC is the lay organization associated w/ the Legionaries. The consecrated women are the female branch. My son has friend who is giving a year as a Regnum Christi co-worker. Ds says he wants to do something more physical- building and such. Co-workers don’t do that kind of physical labor. Co-workers have to wear suits and ties–my son could never do that for a year (he- he!) —KCT
