Hey gang,

I will be travelling to Cary, Illinois for the New Year’s weekend. I am wondering if anyone can recommend a Catholic Church to attend Mass at in the area?

I am looking for a church that fits one of three categories:

1.) Celebrates the Mass according to the current Missal with reverance, beauty, and othodoxy.

2.) Celebrates the Mass according to the Missal of 1962 with reverance, beauty, and orthodoxy.

or

3.) An Eastern Rite Catholic Church that is welcoming of Latin Rite Catholics at their worship… I would prefer one where the Divine Liturgy is celebrated in English. Again with reverance, beauty, and orthodoxy.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

I am not familiar with the area so I don’t have a specific recommendation, but if you strike out one thing I do is go to www.masstimes.org, see what parishes are near where I will be, then check out their web sites - you can tell a lot by looking at them…

How far is that from Chicago. If it is near enough, look into St. John Cantius. It can’t get much better than that in the Chicago area. They do the Latin Novus Ordo and the TLM. Call for their holiday schedule or see if you can find it in their website.

Do us a favor…let us know how it goes.

I’m spending New Year’s Eve with Mass at 11:00pm at Assumption Grotto in Detroit. When it ends around midnight, the pastor leads us into Benediction, then into a Rosary. When it is all done around 12:30, gunfire in the city has ended and we walk across to the church hall where we begin a New Years potluck dinner.

I’m sooooo happy to be participating for the first time this way. What a wonderful way to bring in the new year - in Church!!!

About 12 miles from Cary is St. Peter’s Church in Volo, IL.

They celebrate the TLM at 12:15 PM, and last I heard, it was a priest from the Society of St. John Cantius who says the Mass.

I was going to say St. Peter’s Volo, when Dominica beat me to it.

Hey thanks for the help everyone. Map Quest clocks St. Peter’s at 27 minutes from where I’m staying Saturday night. Unless my wife wants to head for home in the morning or the people we’re staying with are really bent on lunch over the noon hour, this might be doable for me.

Not sure I will, just because of the timing, and there is a Catholic Church right in Cary. Not so sure about blindly going to Catholic Churches any more. There are a lot of illicit ones.

If you are talking about Ss. Peter and Paul, you will probably be safe. And if you’re hanging around Cary on the third Sunday of the month, be sure to stay for the Chaplet of Divine Mercy!

For the most part, Rockford is a pretty orthodox diocese.

Do you know the Mass schedule for Ss. Peter and Paul? Do they have a Mass where they pray the Rosary before?

Agnus Dei… is Rockford a kneel after or stand after Diocese?

Answer to second question first: DEFINITELY A KNEEL!!! (I know it’s not GIRM supposedly, but that’s the way it is). And bow during the Creed, and possibly kneel during the Penetential Rite. And stand at the point in the offertory where it says, “My brothers and sisters, pray that our sacrifice…” And while there will be EEMs, don’t expect them to upstage the Consecration or anythng like that. About the only other thing is priests who get antsy or are of weak voice when they give the homily, and they pace out of the lectern and around the altar railing (if they were in the church, they weren’t yanked in the Rockford Diocese- and some are still used).

Rockford has FSSP and TLM for those who prefer it- but mostly in Rockford (It’s a big diocese).

Here are the normal mass schedule:

And they already have out their January 1, 2006 bulletin, with a EEM and server schedule I think on page 9:

It is not my home parish, but it’s not bad.

Hey, thanks for the help. I’ll probably just hit the 9:30 at Ss. Peter and Paul then. I’m not sure my travel plans would best facilitate heading out to a TLM. There is a basilica about 45 minutes from where I live that has an indult. I’ve just been too lazy to head over there.

I appreciate your guidance on how the rubrics are followed in this parish. I know to do all of these things, although I’m never sure about whether or not the Bishop will use his powers to require the faithful to stand after the Agnus Dei, and I’ve found priests who don’t appreciate it when I kneel back down (like I was raised to do and like my Diocese does). Sheesh, the new GIRM was supposed to curtail abuses and make the Mass more universal so we travellers would be able to worship the same way when we’re on the road. Nah, we added an option in to make things worse 😃

This should be an enjoyable trip. Just wish they’d pray the Rosary before Mass, but hey, you can’t have it all.

You can always pray it yourself in the car. Happy New Year.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I was pleased with the Mass this morning at Ss. Peter and Paul.

I prayed the rosary in the church before Mass. Despite the fact that I quietly wanted to enter, pray the Rosary, and then hear Mass, the priests noticed my devotion and made a positive comment – I really don’t like to draw attention to myself at Mass. However, as I would like to see the tradition of communal praying of the Rosary before Mass to be revived, perhaps this will encourage them to foster this devotion in their parish.

Perhaps. And perhaps some parishes, like mine, say it AFTER Mass. Glad to help you out, though.😃

Before, after… doesn’t make any difference to me. I’ll just be glad to see people praying it en masse again.

My new theme for 2006 – The Year of the Rosary. Everytime someone blows a gasket about something on this board, I shall respond with the quote from that old bumper sticker, “Angry? Need a weapon? Pray the Rosary!” See how long it takes for me to get permabanned for being annoying.

Just an FYI, it isn’t a priest from St. John Cantius at St. Peter Volo.
The Society of St. John Cantius is only in one parish, St. John Cantius.
I did hear a rumor last year that they got permission to expand to another Church, somewhere in the 'burbs (sorry, I forget where.) but I haven’t heard anything since.
Maybe it was St. Peter Volo, though they seem to have a handle on things already. 😃
