My birthday is just around the corner, and I am getting the usual, “What do you want for your birthday?” I would like to get some religious jewelry, but don’t know the etiquite for different pieces of Catholic jewelry, like do you buy this or that for yourself, or are certain things to be gifts from the God parents. I am going through RCIA right now, and nothing has come up about scapulars, crucifix, crosses, or St. medals. I was wondering if you all could share an piece that is significant to you, or your loved ones.

The “Miraculous Medal” is my favorite piece of jewelry. The Sacred heart scapular and Brown Scapular are also favorites of mine.

I wear a Miraculous Medal, a Scapular Medal and a Crucifix… though I don’t wear it as jewelry, I do wear it in 14K gold as “gold filled” turns and tarnishes with time.
I used to wear the Brown Scapular…wool bothers me and have been told that the Scapular Medal carries just as much religious meaning…
Annunciata:)

Whatever you decide to get be sure to have it blessed.

Also note that those who DEVOUTLY wear a Crucifix are promised to die a happy death.

That’s not entirely true.

Please enlighten me because my spiritual director told me it was perfectly ok to wear a Scapular Medal… ( I was inducted into wearing the Brown Scapular in the proper manner) and am allergic to wool:confused:

In 1910 Pope Pius X declared that the cloth Scapular, after enrollment, could be replaced by a medal which has on one side an image of Our Lady - this exception to be used only in torrid zones among natives. He then said: “I believe in the Scapular vision I desire most vehemently that the cloth be worn as heretofore.”
Benedict XV, so anxious and determined to make it very clear to all that the medal was positively never meant to replace the brown cloth Scapular (except in extreme cases) declared on July 8, 1916: "‘In order that one may see that it is Our desire that the Brown Scapular be worn we concede to it a grace the Scapular Medal shall not enjoy.’ And the pontiff proceeded to grant an indulgence of 500 days for each time the cloth Scapular is kissed."
The fact that you are allergic to wool, MIGHT qualify as one of those ‘extreme cases’ mentioned above. I can’t say for sure.

Well if my spiritual director said it was okay…(a member of Opus Dei ) and I trusted in her advice… But, I also respect your opinion so I will ask her again when I see her this month. Thanks.
God Bless,

I didn’t say that there was anything wrong with wearing the medal one. Just that the cloth one MIGHT have more graces attached to it but in your particular case, I can’t be sure.

It might be best to print out this page, highlight the section that I quoted above and ask her to read it and then get her opinion on it as I’m sure she will be more qualified than I to make such a determination.

I have been enrolled since childhood. I also cannot wear wool, though I used to wear it PAINFULLY! My Spiritual Director (a priest of many years) gave me the medal to wear.

His word’s “the Faith in Christ is what it is about. If you wear it as an ornament it has no power to do anything. If you follow “Christ” and do what he ask’s, He can change all things.” Works for me! 🙂
btw…my child was healed of paralysis with the medal…not the cloth. 😉

i have many religious medals, esp of the Blessed Mother in all her various titles (star of the sea, our Lady of Victory, etc) St Michael the Archangel Books sells many fascinating religious medals. They are nicely priced. they are on the internet, look up ‘three days of darkness’ and hunt for their link. They are big on the end times prophecies, and sell many sacramentals with fascinating information.

ooops, forgot to tell you what I did with all those Marian medals. They made a beautiful necklace I wear with pride, sort of like those ones that used to be popular made of coins on a chain like a giant charm bracelet. The medals are a beautiful conversation starter, and allow me to explain the Catholic’s respect for Mary to non-catholics who have some fairly ignorant and sometimes strange concepts of our regard for the Blessed Mother. I have thought about making one with various saints on it, but how to choose…there are so many lovely ones and so many wonderful saints I would be stumped. Hope you find some lovely items.

I agree that a Miraculous Metal is a very good choice. I wear one along with a St Benedict Crucifix.

Another good choice if you pick a Confirmation name would be a metal to that saint.

In the Middle Ages they used to wear a HAIR SHIRT  So maybe the wool scapular is supposed to irritate, the irritation being a sort of penance and providing a constant reminder. . . .
