Hi all
New to the forums

Currently residing in the Detroit area. My family and I have narrowed down a potential relocation to the following areas (in no particular order):
Raleigh, NC.
Knoxville, TN.
Jacksonville, FL.
Colorado Springs, CO.
Boise, ID.
Corpus Christi, TX.
Louisville, KY.
Arlington, VA.

Can anyone recommend a good, solid parish (Grade & HS) in any of these areas?

By ‘good’ and ‘solid’, I mean:
offers a Tridentine Mass
offers a reverent Novus Ordo (Pastor knows what the GIRM is)
offers frequent confession
no happy clap-trap protestant music during the Liturgy (lord of the dance, etc…)
no ‘liturgical dancers’
school provides strong academic program- true to the Magisterium.

Please resist the urge to flame me on the potential inference I make that progressyve/lyberal churches are not ‘Good’ or ‘Solid’😉

You’re asking for a lot.
  1. There isn’t a single parish Catholic high school in all of Pittsburgh, traditional or otherwise, I don’t think they are that prevelant elsewhere either.
  2. Tridentine masses usually draw from areas much larger than a single parish, makes gathering enough children for a viable grade school even a bit problematic as well. Adults can travel 20 miles for mass once a week, sending one’s children 20 miles each day for school isn’t something many will do.
  3. Even if you were to find such a parish, parish priests are appointed for limited periods of time and then move on. If such a parish with all of your requests exists, it wouldn’t necessary follow that it would tomorrow if a different priest is assigned there in 2009.
Good luck in your search, but you’re asking for more that is probably out there for a single parish.

I live in the diocese of Arlington, and absolutely love it! Besides being a beautiful area, it has an immense amount of American history, great schools, a booming local economy, is very diverse, and… WASHINGTON DC, one of the nations greatest cities (well, as long as you stay on the west side 😉 ). I would recommend Northern Virginia to anyone regardless of religion.

However, Catholics happen to be in luck! Bishop Loverde is a great bishop. He confirmed me a few years ago, and has done great things for the diocese. He is not a traditionalist, per se, but is sympathetic; he allowed for three different “indult” parishes a few years BEFORE summorum pontificum came out, and there are quite a few priests in the diocese who can say the TLM.

pretty much every parish has a good elementary school and middle school. Some that stand out:

Seton Junior/High school in Manassas, founded by Dr. Anne Carroll, wife of Warren Carroll, of whom you may have heard. From its Website:

Seton Junior-Senior High School is an accredited, private, co-educational school operated by Catholic laymen dedicated to promoting the established tradition of Catholic secondary education. We teach orthodox, traditional Catholicism, in complete harmony with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church as taught by the Holy Father. We stress individual attention, high academic standards, high standards of conduct, close cooperation with parents, a family atmosphere and activities available to all students.

I work with two people who went to school at Seton, and can personally attest to the wonderful formation that goes on there.

Pope John Paul the Great High School in Dumfries, VA (MY TOWN, and the oldest incorporated town in VA:thumbsup: ), which is brand new this year. It is staffed by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, the so called ‘Nashville Dominicans.’ They are ALWAYS in full habit! The new chaplain of this high school is in residence at my own parish, and a few of the sisters attend solemn mass there, and i can personally attest to their general awesomeness.

To give you a good perception of how important this school is, the Holy Father himself blessed the school’s new tabernacle during his mass at National’s Stadium in DC.

Christendom College in Front Royal, VA, a conservative Catholic liberal arts college, founded and until recently, led by Warren Carroll, (the one whose wife founded Seton). I like to think of it as the Catholic Bob Jones

offers a Tridentine Mass
Not every parish has one, but a number of them do. The priest who ran the former ‘Dappled Things’ blog, which was popular among traditionalists, is from the Diocese of Arlington. I do not know off the top of my head which parishes have TLMs. Also, between 20-45 minutes away from most parts of the diocese is St. Mary Mother of God parish in downtown DC, which offers the TLM and has been featured in many news casts about it.

Also, just a short trip away in DC is the AMAZING, BEAUTIUFL, UNBELEIVEABLE Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, on the campus of Catholic University. It is the largest Catholic church in the western hemisphere, and the most beautiful I have ever seen besides St. Peter’s. And to give you some perspective, i have lived in Europe, and have been inside such majestic places such as the cathedral at Cologne, Notre Dame and Sacre-Coeur in Paris, and St Peter’s and the Sistine Chapel in Rome… This is where the Holy Father visited and held solemn vespers while in DC. He seemed to love it 🙂 . The rector also dedicated one of the chapels to the TLM after Summorum Pontificum’s release, but recently the TLMs have had to move out to the Crypt Church because of the crowds 😃
offers a reverent Novus Ordo (Pastor knows what the GIRM is)
My parish does a solemn mass every sunday, with incense, the Salve Regina recited afterwards, beautiful vestments, and they are starting up both a women’s and a men’s schola to compliment the mass. All the priests and seminarians wear cassocks. This very last sunday, the Pastor gave a thirty minute talk after mass about proper reverence during mass, and quoted at length from the GIRM.
offers frequent confession
All the churches i’ve had experience here offer confessions at least for an hour or two on saturday and a few times a week. Some offer it daily, some others before a mass on sunday. Its always there if you need it.
no happy clap-trap protestant music during the Liturgy (lord of the dance, etc…)
Its there at a few parishes. I left my old parish, a Franciscan parish, because of this issue. But it is less controlled by the diocese, since it is religious. I think most churches that do have that type of music have it only in one mass, so that those people can get what they want, i guess.

This is Bishop Bishop Paul S. Loverde; he’d love to see you in Arlington!

In Raleigh you won’t find one parish with all of those things, but they are all available in the area.

There are several churches that offer the Tridentine Mass:

Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh has a Tridentine Mass on the first Sunday of each month.

St. Bernadette in Holly Springs (20 minute drive from Raleigh) offers one on Tuesday mornings.

Sacred Heart in Dunn (45 minute drive) offers one every Sunday.

For a reverent Novus Ordo, St. Joseph in Raleigh is the best. There are no liturgical abuses there. Once a month the pastor says an early Mass on Sunday morning that is mostly in Latin.

Weds evenings at St. Joseph are awesome! Confession, Adoration, Rosary, Novena, and Mass. There is also confession on Sat. afternoons which often goes over two hours. There are also First Friday and First Saturday Masses, Adoration, and confession.

For schools, there is Cardinal Gibbons High School (diocesan) and a private high school, St. Thomas More Academy, which consistently ranks in the top 50 Catholic schools in the country.

There are several elementary schools in the area. Cathedral School and Our Lady of Lourdes School both won a “Schools of Excellence Award” last year.

You can find more information at the Raleigh Diocese website. We have a good bishop.

Now I want to move to Virginia!

i just moved from Corpus Christi, TX

it’s a good diocese overall but there aren’t alot of TLM’s. the NO masses are pretty close to GIRM but some parishes “creatively interpret” some things. not to the degree of abuse that i have seen here in NorCal but it depends on how “traditional” you are. for instance you will see altar girls and boys there (our parish there had them perform different functions but used both) EMHC are fairly common and altar rails/kneeling to receive the Eucharist are rare. there area number of good catholic schools there. once again it depends on your defintions. we attended st peter prince of apostles parish with good irish priests and habited nuns. it wasn’t as traditionla as my current parish but i never had to endure hand holding around the altar, liturgical dance or a clown mass. the music wasn’t gregorian chant but it was either organ or guitar (depends on which mass) and was catholic hymns.

of the big catholic high schools, incarnate word is the old big reputation for academics. they are independent of the diocese and tend to be slightly liberal.

Pope JPII is the new one and is part of the diocese. it has only been open 3 years but looks pretty good.

CC is heavily catholic with radio and TV ministries and catholic shoppes. there are a large number of parishes there and you will find multiple cultures there too. there are a few czech catholic churches with their distinctive flavor, an anglican use parish, many hispanic parishes and a few others. the cost of living is extremely low and there’s a lot to see and do there.

Jobs are low paying and hard to come by unless you’re in the oil industry, a doctor or a lawyer. (hence the low cost of living)

if you have more specifics let me know.

I am in the Diocese of Knoxville and there is a church in Clinton, TN that has a TLM every Sunday. It is a pretty strong group that went to a weekly Mass from a twice a month to once a week Mass. There is also a good Catholic school in Oak Ridge, staffed by the Dominicans in habits no less. All of these are within 25 miles of Knoxville. If I can provide further info, let me know.

Howdy,
San Antonio, TX great archbishop and assistant bishop
recently selebrated HV with a Fiesta of Life

My parish has the TLM every Sunday at noon, Saturday 8 AM, and First Fridays.

There is also a school in town where the nuns of EWTN will be in residence. The school is segragated by sex K-12 very traditional and academic.

Louisville has a Society of St. Pius X chapel as well as an “approved” Traditional Mass. I can recommend both of them highly, as I know both of the priests, and both are holy men.

I live in Jacksonville, FL, one of the places you said you were looking to relocate. I’m a parishioner at Immaculate Conception church downtown which offers a TLM at 8AM on Sunday. They’re a pretty traditional church.

I was confirmed at St. Pauls on Riverside that has a new very traditional Priest who is trying to get a TLM started at least once a month. They’re a smaller parish than IC but very nice.

Jacksonville, being the tail end of the bible belt is full of Baptists, which make up the majority. But you can be a traditional Catholic in Jax Florida.

Let me know if I can help you out anymore!

Good luck, God Bless.

In Louisville, we have St. Martin of Tours.
saintmartins.psbackup.com/ArtArchitecture/PaintingsandStatuary/tabid/671/Default.aspx

Sundays at 12:30 pm the Forma extrordinaria is prayed. Go to the link provided and click webcams. Unless they have discontinued it, you can watch the Latin Mass at 12:30 PM EST. (we are on daylight savings time).

St Martins is the whole package. Perpetual Adoration Chapel, remains of two Saints, etc. No school, but there are several good schools in town, including two traditional ones.

As far as high schools, Sacred Heart Academy is an excellent girls school, and Trinity High or St Xavier are super for boys.

The annual St X/Trinity football game is played at U of L’s Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium and draws 30,000 plus !

I’ll vouch for that 🙂

I don’t tend to compare priests, but, I’ll have to say, Fr S at St Martins is the real deal. If I were Pope, he’d have a red cap !

I’ve visted Louisville on several occasions and it seemed very Catholic. The city has alot going for it… beautiful old churches add to the charm. We have friends who live in the Highlands… love those beautiful old brick houses and tree lined streets. And we’re jealous of their winters… not much snow at all and spring seems to come much earlier than where we live. Louisville seems to have lots of southern charm without the “hick” factor. Sorry, that’s the yankee in me talking. :o

Thanks for the kind words about our town. 🙂

Louisville is kind of two towns really. One west of I-65 and one east of it. The Highlands is on the east side, and is my favorite part of town as well. 🙂

West side is the “Nascar” type of area lol. Not knocking it, I live on the west side, but the east side is the more civil side. On the east side, you don’t have to put up with the 5000 watt thump of the kids cars.

God Bless

Hi! While Nashville isn’t known for its Catholicism, I second what the poster above said about the sisters. You might want to look into Nashville because we have a great old [very historic - awesome!] parish called Assumption. It is very traditional. The Cathedral of the Incarnation is also very traditional, and they have one Mass that is the “new Mass for congregations,” but it took me a number of weeks to figure that out because it isn’t very progressive. I personally would suggest looking at areas where the Nashville Dominicans are; if not already traditional areas, the sisters bring tradition with them. I am currently at the high school that bears the name of the congregation, dating back to the very beginnings of the community; if you have any daughters, I think you might want to check it out! There is also a college and a grade school on the same campus, with all three schools owned and operated by the sisters. Speaking of John Paul the Great High School in Dumfries, my history teacher from this past year is actually one of the three sisters that will be up there teaching. She’s the most brilliant mind I’ve ever come across.

God bless you and I will pray that the Holy Spirit leads you to a suitable parish and city for your family! 😉

As I said before, the chaplain of JP The Great is in residency at my parish, and i often see three Dominican nuns at the solemn mass. With all this information, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen your history teacher 🙂 I have yet to meet them; hopefully I can before i leave for school
