There are two directions you can go when you encounter doubts about the faith. In the one case you can refuse to accept the church until it has been proven true. In the other you hold to the church until it has been proven false. Please choose the latter. I’m not telling you to quit searching for the truth, but rather to seek out ALL the truth and not merely the anti-Catholic rhetoric. Continue to ask questions of us…but perhaps not 2,000 words at a time

The writer of this rhetoric completely misunderstands “development of doctrine”. Whatever doctrine the Catholic Church has come to us from God, by definition. It cannot change. But sometimes throughout the course of history, some people can move away from the Sacred Tradition and practice heresy. A good example of this is in the real presence. The first time that the Eucharist was talked about as being a memorial only (and not literally Christ’s body) was sometime in the 11th century (but I can’t back this up right now, sorry!). Before the idea (of Christ’s body being literally present in the Eucharist) was challenged, the doctrine did not need to be defined. It only needed to be defined after it was challenged, to prevent people from making this mistake.

There is a lot more to this, but I’ll leave it up to others. Perhaps you could read some of John Henry Newman’s works. God bless!

Questions:

Don’t freak out…this type of quasi intellectual anti catholicism has been around for a long time. The fellow who wrote this done the classic strawman arquments and makes it sound meaningful.

It is easy to complain and criticize as this guy has done but has not sufficiently provided a complete and irrevocable historical and actual and irrefutable replacement for the Catholic Church.

He’s a boy throwing rocks at the edifice of St. Peter’s and whining the whole time…sure it makes noise and maybe chip some of the columns in his handiwork but he nor anyone from his camp built anything that comes close to a church that can claim half of what the Catholic Church CAN claim.

Be at peace, the truth is the truth and this minor critique doesn’t change it one bit.
