Hi,
Some one please shed some light on this for me. I recall on the commandments. Honor your mother and father, even if you dont agree with them. Well my dear mother, takes the lords name in vain in nearly all of her sentences, and it really bothers me, my children do hear this.
When I tell her about this, she has an excuse, and really does not like I think] being corrected by her daughter.
I sometimes take her to my parish for mass, and I am deadly afraid she will do this there after mass in the foyer.
Everywhere I go, in everyday life, even on the t.v. I hear people cussing in the lord’s name, they dont even know God, yet they swear in his name daily.
As for my mother, what do I do here? honor her and let her continue, or dishonor her and tell her to quit it.

Yours in Christ

Be very kind and explain it to her. She’s setting a very bad example for your children, if nothing else. If that doesn’t get to her - tell her to stop! You can be charitable about it. If she still continues, tell her you won’t bring her grandchildren to see her if she continues - that you just cannot and will not consciously expose them to this kind of behavior. You wouldn’t let them watch a movie with that kind of language in it - would you?

If you try - as charitably as possible - to get her to understand then I don’t think you run the risk of “not honoring your mother” as the commandment states. That commandment assumes your parents are doing whats right in God’s eyes as well! And, clearly, in this particular situation, she is not doing what’s good and right in God’s eyes, so I think you would be justified.

She needs to break the habit!

Familiar story, I’m a teenager and my mother lets an “O my --” slip once in a while… I will often just say, Mom… And she is not pleased. But “Blessed are those who are persecuted for my sake!” No one said it would be easy!

How I encouraged my children to fight this.

When someone takes the name of The Lord in vain say -

Blessed by the name of The Lord my God - twice

once to make reparation for the blasphamy and a second time to replace it.

If you or your children have the courage to say it out loud - so much the better, but at least teach them to say it under their breath when they hear The Lord’s name in vain.

At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend

Better still, have your kids do it in Hebrew–“Baruch shem Adonai Eloheynu,” which actually ends “…our God” rather than “…my God.” They’ll think your kids are either Jewish or Pentecostal 😃

I know what you mean…i work with a Doctor and when he gets upset, the words…Jesus Christ come out in a slang way!.. it really steams me:mad: .
I wish there was a nice way of telling others we are offened by this!
If they only knew how much it hurts our Lord, and his people that love him.

Ok… What about your husband… I tell my children to tell daddy he is using a “Potty” mouth when ever they here something bad said in anger… I’m not perfect either, but I will usually apologize to my children and explain that I was wrong…especially now that my almost 4 yr old repeats everything you say now  I will have to teach them and myself that little prayer Mandi shared…Great way to handle the situation…

At school, I hear it all the time… I go to a so-called Catholic school:mad: . Some of the teachers use it… I don’t use it, but bugs me so badly… :banghead:

In the office were a very devout Catholic friend of mine works the younger women think nothing of taking the name of the Lord in vain… and they are aware that she is deeply offended by it… Recently when one of them was about to blaspheme… she caught herself and said “Sorry not in front of Mary” To which Mary replied, “Thank you”… I guess they have been watching their language more carefully since…;).
