Half of Americans consider themselves “pro-choice” on abortion, surpassing the 44% who identify as “pro-life.” This is the first time since 2008 that the pro-choice position has had a statistically significant lead in Americans’ abortion views.

The recent increase in the pro-choice side has occurred almost equally among men and women. However, for men, this has not compensated for the larger drop in their identification as pro-choice in 2012. As a result, a slight gender gap has emerged over the last three years, with women more likely than men to be pro-choice.(54 to 46 %)This contrasts with 2001 through 2011, when there was virtually no gender gap.

This is not so surprising since the percentage increase in the pro-choice position, particularly among women, most likely has something to do with women’s perception that the Republican Party is anti-woman in that it is in favor of defunding Planned Parenthood and opposed to providing women with health plans that include contraceptive means of birth control. Further, there appears to be more of a drive than ever before among GOP politicians of the far right to shut down all abortion clinics, as well as an unwillingness to make any exceptions in instances of rape, incest, or the life and health of the mother. It also does not help matters that a few Republican Congressmen have exhibited social gaffes and ignorance with regard to their discussions on rape and pregnancy. All of the above reasons probably cause many women to think that men, particularly male Republican politicians, are insensitive to their health and medical needs as women and dismiss their ability to make their own personal decisions about family planning.

My previous post was deleted, which is the first time this has happened to me on CAF. So I’ll try again.

Further, there has recently been an aggressive push by the Far Right of the GOP toward closing all abortion clinics, as well as refusing to make any exceptions in instances of rape, incest, and the life and health of the mother. Finally, it does not help matters much for the pro-life position that several Republican Congressmen have made remarks concerning rape and pregnancy which reflect their ignorance and insensitivity toward women’s health issues. Therefore many women view especially male Republican politicians as antagonistic toward their healthcare and medical needs, and dismissive of their personal choices with regard to family planning.

AFAIK, the Catholic teaching is that abortion is not allowed in the case of rape or incest, even if the girl is very young.

Yes, you are correct. However, my point is that the GOP is not the Church yet its Far Right members still refuse to make allowances for these cases. That is the perception by many women and probably the fact of the matter as well. And this is one of the reasons why many women are either standing firm or shifting toward a pro-choice stance rather than embracing a pro-life position.
