‘‘Loss of faith cause depression’’

Whats everybody’s opinion on this?

I don’t know. It doesn’t surprise me that it would, because often a loss of faith is a questioning of every structure you thought to be true. But I don’t think it causes depression in every case. I do think sometimes people find it liberating. Two sides of the same coin, I suppose.

Listening to people who are struggling with their faith , sadness is commonly expressed.

I can see how that would be. If someone questioned everything they’d previously believed due to ‘having the rug pulled out from under them’, then they would feel ‘rudderless’ - they’d lost their mechanism on which they’d depended to steer themselves through life. They would be feeling ‘lost’, not knowing how to proceed from that point, the ‘where to now’ questioning thoughts, what to fill this hole in their lives? So yes, I could see how a loss of faith could lead to depression for some people, or be one factor contributing to its’ cause.

Losing anything dear to us can cause depression especially faith our life changing love of christ and the hope he gives us, conversely of course having faith doesn’t preclude the faithful from suffering depression from other causes, though we can offer this up and be healed if it is god’s will in his time.

‘O Christ Jesus
When all is darkness
And we feel our weakness and helplessness,
Give us the sense of Your Presence,
Your Love and Your Strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
In Your protecting love
And strengthening power,
So that nothing may frighten or worry us,
For, living close to You,
We shall see Your Hand,
Your Purpose, Your Will through all things.’ - St Ignatius of Loyola

Depression is a medical reality. Faith filled people can suffer from depression the same way they could suffer from the flu or cancer.

Not all sadness is depression.

Finding my faith may have triggered my depression. It made me look very introspectively and helped me see my sins. I don’t know for certain if it was related, but after medications and confession, with some counseling, I’ve never been happier in my faith.

And not all depression is sadness.

And as a medical reality, it needs to be addressed under proper medical care.

I would say it would also cause it if we consider our faith as a highly valuable treasure. We usually become sad when we lose something valuable, the more value it had, the more sadness we will experience. Having said that, those who do not consider their faith valuable might not feel depressed or sad.

So I guess it could lead to depression, if you consider it very valuable. Regardless, a life without God would indeed be a very sad life.
