Dear CAF,

My cousin is two weeks from her due date and just found out the baby has died. She is having labor induced tonight. Please pray for her and her family during this difficult time.

I am going to send a sympathy card but am not sure if a Mass card is appropriate. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about making a donation to a charitable organization in the baby`s name (in honor of the baby) instead of sending flowers but I am not sure what is most appropriate.

I will express my sorrow to her for the loss of her baby but am not sure on whether making a donation, offering a Mass or sending flowers is best. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sincerely,

Maria1212

MISCARRIAGE PRAYER

My Lord, the baby is dead!
Why, my Lord—dare I ask why? It will not hear the whisper of the wind or see the beauty of its parents’ face—it will not see the beauty of Your creation or the flame of a sunrise. Why, my Lord?
“Why, My child—do you ask ‘why’? Well, I will tell you why.
Code:
You see, the child lives. Instead of the wind he hears the sound of angels singing before My throne. Instead of the beauty that passes he sees everlasting Beauty—he sees My face. He was created and lived a short time so the image of his parents imprinted on his face may stand before Me as their personal intercessor. He knows secrets of heaven unknown to men on earth. He laughs with a special joy that only the innocent possess. My ways are not the ways of man. I create for My Kingdom and each creature fills a place in that Kingdom that could not be filled by another. He was created for My joy and his parents’ merits. He has never seen pain or sin. He has never felt hunger or pain. I breathed a soul into a seed, made it grow and called it forth.”

I am humbled before you, my Lord, for questioning Your wisdom, goodness, and love. I speak as a fool—forgive me. I acknowledge Your sovereign rights over life and death. I thank You for the life that began for so short a time to enjoy so long an Eternity.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.
Amen.

Almighty Father,
give us courage to proclaim the supreme dignity
of all human life and to demand
that society itself give its protection.
We ask this in your name,
through the redemptive act
of your Son and in the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Maria, your cousin will be grieving for the loss of her child. Does your parish have a Prayer Shawl Ministry? This is something I am trying to get started in my parish and I have done some research on it. Prayer shawls are knitted or crocheted from soft wool. Prayers are said while making the shawl and they may also be blessed by a priest before being given to the recipients. The purpose is to let the recipient feel, through using the shawl, the love of God and the prayers and compassion of the maker of the shawl.

Even if your parish does not have this ministry, perhaps another parish does and would be willing to give a shawl to your cousin. We all feel comfort and solace when hugged or being surrounded in softness - the shawl can provide this, particularly when the person is alone and feeling the depths of her grief.

This is just a suggestion for what you could give her to help her in this distressful time.

Hello Maria i am very very sad and sorry for your cousin and her precious baby.
I think a Mass said would be wonderful also buy for her something to remember her baby.
When i lost my first son (27yrs ago)i was naturally devastated but cling on to anything to remeber him.In my bedroom are photos of him,in my lounge and my three other sons all remember him by one called his first son after him the second son called his baby(just born) his middle name after him.
I think a baby book to keep memorabilia in photos scan pictures blood test results anything at all would be kind of special BUT first see how your cousin reacts to all this trauma she still has to endure.See how she is after the delivery.
My love to her and prayers and for the lovely baby. You are a good cousin I will pray for all of you at this terribly sad time
By the way a small posy of flowers for her would be thoughtful and appreciated i think !!:grouphug:

I am sorry for your cousin. The Mass idea sounds great to me. If I were in your position, I would definitely make a donation to your cousin’s favorite charity or to some child-related organization. Personally, I did not care so much for bouquets of flowers after my miscarriages. To me bouquets were one more thing dying. A potted plant, on the other hand, is a longer term symbol. I still have a potted plant from when my brother died in 1996. What about planting a tree? One major thing you can do for your cousin is talk to her about the baby. So many people won’t, either because of their own discomfort, or because they think they are causing your cousin more pain. Acknowledging her baby, both now and on certain anniversaries (i.e due date, or next Mother’s Day, etc) will be a gift in its own right.

Our Father,
Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day, our daily bread,
And forgive us our tresspasses,
As we forgive those who tresspass against us,
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Our hearts are with you.
